這樣，我們要怎麼說呢？那不追求義的外邦人卻獲得了義，就是因信而獲得的義。但以色列人追求律法的義，反而達不到律法的義。這是甚麼緣故呢？是因為他們不憑着信心，而是憑着行為，他們正跌在那絆腳石上。就如經上所記：「我在錫安放一塊絆腳的石頭，使人跌倒的磐石；信靠他的人必不蒙羞。」

就去探測深淺，探得有十二丈；稍往前行，又探深淺，探得有九丈。

尼尼微人就信服神，宣告禁食，從最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，說：「王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可嘗任何東西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告神。各人要回轉離開惡道，離棄自己掌中的殘暴。誰知道神也許會回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。」神察看他們的行為，見他們離開惡道，神就改變心意，原先所說要降與他們的災難，他不降了。

那時，耶穌在一些城行了許多異能。因為城裏的人不肯悔改，他就責備那些城說：「哥拉汛哪，你有禍了！伯賽大啊，你有禍了！因為在你們中間所行的異能若行在推羅、西頓，他們早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。但我告訴你們，在審判的日子，推羅和西頓所受的，比你們還容易受呢！迦百農啊，你以為要被舉到天上嗎？你要被推下陰間！因為在你那裏所行的異能，若行在所多瑪，它還可以存留到今日。但我告訴你們，在審判的日子，所多瑪地方所受的，比你們還容易受呢！」
