後來，猶大王背叛了巴比倫王，派使者到埃及請求支援軍隊馬匹。他能成功嗎？他這樣做怎能逃脫懲罰呢？他這樣背約怎能逃脫懲罰呢？「我憑我的永恆起誓，巴比倫王立他做王，他卻棄約背誓，他必死在巴比倫。敵人築起圍攻的土壘和高臺大肆殺戮的時候，法老雖然兵強馬壯，人多勢眾，仍無法幫他抗敵。

危難時投靠奸詐之人，形同倚靠壞牙和跛腳。

投靠耶和華勝過倚靠人。投靠耶和華勝過倚靠權貴。

你們不要倚靠權貴，不要倚靠世人，他們救不了你們。他們氣息一斷，便歸回塵土，他們的打算轉眼成空。

那時，法老的軍隊已從埃及出發，正在圍攻耶路撒冷的迦勒底人聽見消息就退兵了。耶和華對耶利米先知說：「這是以色列的上帝耶和華的話，『猶大王派你們來求問我，你們告訴他，前來支援你們的法老軍隊必中途返回埃及，而迦勒底人必捲土重來，攻佔這城，將它付之一炬。耶和華說，你們不要自欺，以為迦勒底人必撤軍。其實他們不會撤軍。即使你們能打敗迦勒底全軍，他們營中受傷的殘兵也必起來燒毀這城。』」當迦勒底人因害怕法老的軍隊而撤軍的時候，

耶和華說：「信靠世人、倚靠血肉之軀、背叛耶和華的人該受咒詛！這樣的人毫無福樂，像沙漠中的灌木。他要住在曠野中乾旱無人的鹽鹼地。

看啊，你所倚靠的埃及不過是一根破裂的蘆葦，倚靠它的必被刺破手。倚靠埃及王法老的下場都是這樣。』
