For Yahweh of Armies says:‘ For honor he has sent me to the nations which plundered you; for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.

“‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ When I have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and am sanctified in them in the sight of the nations, then they will dwell in their own land which I gave to my servant Jacob.They will dwell in it securely. Yes, they will build houses, plant vineyards, and will dwell securely, when I have executed judgments on all those who scorn them all around. Then they will know that I am Yahweh their God.”’”

So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

Yahweh will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night, for over all the glory will be a canopy.

They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom tree are their food.They are driven out from among men. They cry after them as after a thief;So that they dwell in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.

He has made me dwell in dark places, as those who have been long dead.

We grope for the wall like the blind. Yes, we grope as those who have no eyes. We stumble at noon as if it were twilight. Among those who are strong, we are like dead men.

You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades.

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God.

Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,“ Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and tell them, even the shepherds,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Shouldn’t the shepherds feed the sheep?You eat the fat. I will deliver my sheep from their mouth, that they may not be food for them.”“‘ For the Lord Yahweh says:“ Behold, I myself, even I, will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so I will seek out my sheep. I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited places of the country.I will feed them with good pasture; and their fold will be on the mountains of the height of Israel. “ Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her and the daughters of the famous nations, to the lower parts of the earth, with those who go down into the pit.Whom do you pass in beauty? Go down, and be laid with the uncircumcised.They will fall among those who are slain by the sword. She is delivered to the sword. Draw her away with all her multitudes.The strong among the mighty will speak to him out of the middle of Sheol with those who help him. They have gone down. The uncircumcised lie still, slain by the sword.“ Asshur is there with all her company. Her graves are all around her. To you, Yahweh, I call. My rock, don’t be deaf to me, lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.

For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol.I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help,set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.

Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.How you have fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!You said in your heart,“ I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north!I will ascend above the heights of the clouds! I will make myself like the Most High!”Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit.Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying,“ Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms,who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities, who didn’t release his prisoners to their home?”All the kings of the nations, sleep in glory, everyone in his own house.But you are cast away from your tomb like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain, who are thrust through with the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit; like a dead body trodden under foot.

“ Therefore the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel. I will be jealous for my holy name.They will bear their shame, and all their trespasses by which they have trespassed against me, when they dwell securely in their land, and no one will make them afraid,when I have brought them back from the peoples, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations.They will know that I am Yahweh their God, in that I caused them to go into captivity among the nations, and have gathered them to their own land. Then I will leave none of them captive any more.I won’t hide my face from them any more; for I have poured out my Spirit on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord Yahweh.”

“‘“ I will make my holy name known among my people Israel. I won’t allow my holy name to be profaned any more. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh, the Holy One in Israel.

Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

He said,“ I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.

But if Yahweh makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh.”
