“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Edom took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so,

主耶和華曰、以東行報復於猶大家、因報復而干大罪、

主耶和華曰、以東攻猶大以雪其忿、干犯於我。

主天主如是云、以東攻猶大族以復仇、因其復仇干犯罪戾、

The Lord and King says,“ Edom got even with Judah. That made Edom very guilty.”

“ Thus says the Lord God: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance on them,

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The people of Edom have sinned greatly by avenging themselves against the people of Judah.

“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them,

‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”

‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,”

Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

This is what the Lord God says:“ Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them,

Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

“ This is what the sovereign LORD says:‘ Edom has taken vengeance against the house of Judah; they have made themselves fully culpable by taking vengeance on them.

“‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ Because Edom has dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended, and taken revenge on them;”

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell.“ Tear it down,” they cried,“ tear it down to its foundations!”

Concerning Edom: This is what the Lord Almighty says:“ Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?Turn and flee, hide in deep caves, you who live in Dedan, for I will bring disaster on Esau at the time when I punish him.If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes? If thieves came during the night, would they not steal only as much as they wanted?But I will strip Esau bare; I will uncover his hiding places, so that he cannot conceal himself. His armed men are destroyed, also his allies and neighbors, so there is no one to say,‘ Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive. Your widows too can depend on me.’”This is what the Lord says:“ If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must drink it.I swear by myself,” declares the Lord,“ that Bozrah will become a ruin and a curse, an object of horror and reproach; and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”I have heard a message from the Lord; an envoy was sent to the nations to say,“ Assemble yourselves to attack it! Rise up for battle!”“ Now I will make you small among the nations, despised by mankind.The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.“ Edom will become an object of horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds.As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown, along with their neighboring towns,” says the Lord,“ so no one will live there; no people will dwell in it.“ Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland, I will chase Edom from its land in an instant. Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this? Who is like me and who can challenge me? And what shepherd can stand against me?”Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom, what he has purposed against those who live in Teman: The young of the flock will be dragged away; their pasture will be appalled at their fate.At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea.Look! An eagle will soar and swoop down, spreading its wings over Bozrah. In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Moab and Seir said,“ Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,”

This is what the Lord says:“ For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked,I will send fire on Teman that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.”

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.“ The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.

Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself,“ The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him,“ Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.

The Edomites had again come and attacked Judah and carried away prisoners,while the Philistines had raided towns in the foothills and in the Negev of Judah. They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon and Gederoth, as well as Soko, Timnah and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages.

The word of the Lord came to me:“ Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir; prophesy against itand say:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.I will turn your towns into ruins and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“‘ Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax,therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go.I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.I will make you desolate forever; your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“‘ Because you have said,“ These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them,” even though I the Lord was there,therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said,“ They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.”You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”
