Its priests break my law. They treat things set apart to me as if they were not holy. They treat holy and common things as if they were the same. They teach that there is no difference between things that are‘ clean’ and things that are not. They refuse to keep my Sabbath days. So they treat me as if I were not holy.

Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord.Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three- pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiledand would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing,“ Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”If the person said to him,“ Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer,“ No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.

They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.

The priests did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.

But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the Lord Almighty.

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.

And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them,‘ These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’

Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

Her officials within her are roaring lions; her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning.Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law.

Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’

“ This is what the Lord Almighty says:‘ Ask the priests what the law says:If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’” The priests answered,“ No.”Then Haggai said,“ If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”“ Yes,” the priests replied,“ it becomes defiled.”Then Haggai said,“‘ So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord.‘ Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.

“‘ You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground— those that I have set apart as unclean for you.

But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

Therefore this is what the Lord says:“ If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.

Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command.So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.Moses then said to Aaron,“ This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:“‘ Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.’” Aaron remained silent.

Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.“‘ Yet the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws— by which the person who obeys them will live— and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and destroy them in the wilderness.

“ A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.“ It is you priests who show contempt for my name.“ But you ask,‘ How have we shown contempt for your name?’“ By offering defiled food on my altar.“ But you ask,‘ How have we defiled you?’“ By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible.When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

“ And now, you priests, this warning is for you.If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty,“ I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.“ Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.

“ Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the Lord.“ Say to them:‘ For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the Lord, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the Lord.“‘ If a descendant of Aaron has a defiling skin disease or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen,or if he touches any crawling thing that makes him unclean, or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be.The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening. He must not eat any of the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water.When the sun goes down, he will be clean, and after that he may eat the sacred offerings, for they are his food.He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals, and so become unclean through it. I am the Lord.“‘ The priests are to perform my service in such a way that they do not become guilty and die for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.“‘ No one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the guest of a priest or his hired worker eat it.But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if slaves are born in his household, they may eat his food.If a priest’s daughter marries anyone other than a priest, she may not eat any of the sacred contributions.But if a priest’s daughter becomes a widow or is divorced, yet has no children, and she returns to live in her father’s household as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food. No unauthorized person, however, may eat it.“‘ Anyone who eats a sacred offering by mistake must make restitution to the priest for the offering and add a fifth of the value to it.The priests must not desecrate the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the Lordby allowing them to eat the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt requiring payment. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.’”The Lord said to Moses,“ Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them:‘ If any of you— whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel— presents a gift for a burnt offering to the Lord, either to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering,you must present a male without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted on your behalf.Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf.When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship offering to the Lord to fulfill a special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to be acceptable.Do not offer to the Lord the blind, the injured or the maimed, or anything with warts or festering or running sores. Do not place any of these on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord.You may, however, present as a freewill offering an ox or a sheep that is deformed or stunted, but it will not be accepted in fulfillment of a vow.You must not offer to the Lord an animal whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn or cut. You must not do this in your own land,and you must not accept such animals from the hand of a foreigner and offer them as the food of your God. They will not be accepted on your behalf, because they are deformed and have defects.’”The Lord said to Moses,“ When a calf, a lamb or a goat is born, it is to remain with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a food offering presented to the Lord.Do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day.“ When you sacrifice a thank offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf.It must be eaten that same day; leave none of it till morning. I am the Lord.“ Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord.Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the Lord, who made you holyand who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord.”

“ As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the people of Israel are disgraced— they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets.They say to wood,‘ You are my father,’ and to stone,‘ You gave me birth.’ They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say,‘ Come and save us!’

You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’”

As it is written:“ God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
