Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.

Its priests break my law. They treat things set apart to me as if they were not holy. They treat holy and common things as if they were the same. They teach that there is no difference between things that are‘ clean’ and things that are not. They refuse to keep my Sabbath days. So they treat me as if I were not holy.

Now the sons of Eli were useless men; they did not know the Lord.And this was the custom of the priests with the people: when anyone was offering a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come while the meat was cooking, with a three pronged fork in his hand.And he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; everything that the fork brought up, the priest would take for himself. They did so in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.Also, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing,“ Give the priest meat for roasting, as he will not take cooked meat from you, only raw.”And if the man said to him,“ They must burn the fat first, then take as much as you desire,” then he would say,“ No, but you must give it to me now; and if not, I am taking it by force!”And so the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for the men treated the offering of the Lord disrespectfully.

Moreover, they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the common, and teach them to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.

The priests did not say,‘ Where is the Lord?’ And those who handle the Law did not know Me; The rulers also revolted against Me, And the prophets prophesied by Baal And walked after things that were of no benefit.

But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction; you have ruined the covenant of Levi,” says the Lord of armies.

Her leaders pronounce judgment for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,“ Is the Lord not in our midst? Catastrophe will not come upon us.”Therefore on account of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins, And the mountain of the temple will become high places of a forest.

When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned My holy name, because it was said of them,‘ These are the people of the Lord, yet they have left His land.’

Now Eli was very old; and he heard about everything that his sons were doing to all Israel, and that they slept with the women who served at the doorway of the tent of meeting.

Her leaders within her are roaring lions, Her judges are wolves at evening; They have no bones to gnaw in the morning.Her prophets are insolent, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the Law.

Why are you showing contempt for My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded for My dwelling, and why are you honoring your sons above Me, by making yourselves fat with the choicest of every offering of My people Israel?’

“ The Lord of armies says this:‘ Now ask the priests for a ruling:If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or touches cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?’ ” And the priests answered,“ No.”Then Haggai said,“ If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these things, will the latter become unclean?” And the priests answered,“ It will become unclean.”Then Haggai responded and said,“ ‘ So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the Lord,‘ and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

You are therefore to make a distinction between the clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean; and you shall not make yourselves detestable by animal or by bird, or by anything that crawls on the ground, which I have distinguished for you as unclean.

Because of the sins of her prophets And the wrongdoings of her priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood of the righteous,

Therefore, this is what the Lord says:“ If you return, then I will restore you— You will stand before Me; And if you extract the precious from the worthless, You will become My spokesman. They, for their part, may turn to you, But as for you, you are not to turn to them.

Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on the fire and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them.And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.Then Moses said to Aaron,“ It is what the Lord spoke, saying,‘ By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.’ ” So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.

Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.

“ ‘ A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the Lord of armies to you, the priests who despise My name! But you say,‘ How have we despised Your name?’You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say,‘ How have we defiled You?’ In that you say,‘ The table of the Lord is to be despised.’And when you present a blind animal for sacrifice, is it not evil? Or when you present a lame or sick animal, is it not evil? So offer it to your governor! Would he be pleased with you, or would he receive you kindly?” says the Lord of armies.

“ And now, this commandment is for you, the priests.If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the Lord of armies,“ then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.Behold, I am going to rebuke your descendants, and I will spread dung on your faces, the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it.

“ Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they dedicate to Me, so as not to profane My holy name; I am the Lord.Say to them,‘ Any man among all your descendants throughout your generations who approaches the holy gifts which the sons of Israel consecrate to the Lord, while he has an uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from My presence; I am the Lord.No man of the descendants of Aaron, who has leprosy or has a discharge, may eat of the holy gifts until he is clean. And one who touches anything made unclean by a corpse, or a man who has a seminal emission,or a man who touches any swarming things by which he is made unclean, or touches any person by whom he is made unclean, whatever his uncleanness;a person who touches any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat of the holy gifts unless he has bathed his body in water.But when the sun sets, he will be clean, and afterward he may eat of the holy gifts, for it is his food.He shall not eat an animal which dies or is torn by animals, becoming unclean by it; I am the Lord.They shall therefore perform their duty to Me, so that they do not bear sin because of it and die by it because they profane it; I am the Lord who sanctifies them.‘ No layman, however, is to eat the holy gift; a foreign resident with the priest or a hired worker shall not eat the holy gift.But if a priest buys a slave as his property with his money, that person may eat of it, and those who are born in his house may eat of his food.If a priest’s daughter is married to a layman, she shall not eat of the offering of the holy gifts.But if a priest’s daughter becomes a widow or divorced, and has no child and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat of her father’s food; but no layman shall eat of it.If, however, someone eats a holy food unintentionally, then he shall add to it a fifth of it and shall give the holy food to the priest.And they shall not profane the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they offer to the Lord,and thereby bring upon them punishment for guilt by eating their holy gifts; for I am the Lord who sanctifies them.’ ”Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Speak to Aaron and to his sons, and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them,‘ Anyone of the house of Israel or of the strangers in Israel who presents his offering, whether it is any of their vows or any of their voluntary offerings, which they present to the Lord as a burnt offering—for you to be accepted— it must be a male without defect from the cattle, the sheep, or the goats.Whatever has a defect, you shall not offer, for it will not be accepted for you.When someone offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord to fulfill a special vow or for a voluntary offering, of the herd or of the flock, it must be without defect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it.Those that are blind, fractured, maimed, or have a wart, a festering rash, or scabs, you shall not offer to the Lord, nor make of them an offering by fire on the altar to the Lord.Now as for an ox or a lamb which has an overgrown or stunted member, you may present it as a voluntary offering, but for a vow it will not be accepted.Also anything with its testicles squashed, crushed, torn off, or cut off, you shall not offer to the Lord, nor sacrifice in your land,nor shall you offer any of these animals taken from the hand of a foreigner as the food of your God; for their deformity is in them, they have an impairment. They will not be accepted for you.’ ”Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ When an ox or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall remain seven days with its mother, and from the eighth day on it will be considered acceptable as a sacrifice of an offering by fire to the Lord.But, whether it is an ox or a sheep, you shall not slaughter both it and its young in one day.When you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.It shall be eaten on the same day; you shall leave none of it until morning. I am the Lord.So you shall keep My commandments, and do them; I am the Lord.“ And you shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel; I am the Lord who sanctifies you,who brought you out from the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am the Lord.”

“ Like the shame of a thief when he is discovered, So the house of Israel is shamed; They, their kings, their leaders, Their priests, and their prophets,Who say to a tree,‘ You are my father,’ And to a stone,‘ You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me, And not their faces; But in the time of their trouble they will say,‘ Arise and save us!’

to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.

For“ the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
