“ Son of man, say to the land,‘ You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.’

“ Son of man, speak to the land. Tell it,‘ You have not been washed clean with rain. That’s because I am angry with you.’

“ Son of man, give the people of Israel this message: In the day of my indignation, you will be like a polluted land, a land without rain.

The people did not turn to him who struck them, nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.

She listens to no voice; she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord; she does not draw near to her God.

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord— this same King Ahaz.

The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain the refining goes on, for the wicked are not removed.

All the officers of the priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of the Lord that he had made holy in Jerusalem.The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy.

O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.

On account of your unclean lewdness, because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your uncleanness, you shall not be cleansed anymore till I have satisfied my fury upon you.

Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

“ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you.But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster.But since we left off making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”And the women said,“ When we made offerings to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
