Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.Now it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and encamped against it; and they built a siege wall against it all around.So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine had become so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.Then the city wall was broken through, and all the men of war fled at night by way of the gate between two walls, which was by the king’s garden, even though the Chaldeans were still encamped all around against the city. And the king went by way of the plain.But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his army was scattered from him.So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and they pronounced judgment on him.Then they killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, put out the eyes of Zedekiah, bound him with bronze fetters, and took him to Babylon.

So she said to Elijah,“ What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”

And he took the king’s offspring, made a covenant with him, and put him under oath. He also took away the mighty of the land,that the kingdom might be brought low and not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.But he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still be delivered?‘ As I live,’ says the Lord God,‘ surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke— with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.Nor will Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company do anything in the war, when they heap up a siege mound and build a wall to cut off many persons.Since he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and in fact gave his hand and still did all these things, he shall not escape.’”Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ As I live, surely My oath which he despised, and My covenant which he broke, I will recompense on his own head.

Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.

Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scornful men, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,Because you have said,“ We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”
