The best of them is like a thorn; the most godly among them are more dangerous than a row of thorn bushes. The day you try to avoid by posting watchmen– your appointed time of punishment– is on the way, and then you will experience confusion.

The land cannot endure all his prophecies.As a matter of fact, Amos is saying this:‘ Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly be carried into exile away from its land.’”Amaziah then said to Amos,“ Leave, you visionary! Run away to the land of Judah! Earn your living and prophesy there!Don’t prophesy at Bethel any longer, for a royal temple and palace are here!”Amos replied to Amaziah,“ I was not a prophet by profession. No, I was a herdsman who also took care of sycamore fig trees.Then the LORD took me from tending flocks and gave me this commission,‘ Go! Prophesy to my people Israel!’So now listen to the LORD’s message! You say,‘ Don’t prophesy against Israel! Don’t preach against the family of Isaac!’“ Therefore this is what the LORD says:‘ Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets and your sons and daughters will die violently. Your land will be given to others and you will die in a foreign land. Israel will certainly be carried into exile away from its land.’”

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.

And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage,

But I am full of the courage that the LORD’s Spirit gives, and have a strong commitment to justice. This enables me to confront Jacob with its rebellion, and Israel with its sin.

“‘ No longer will Israel suffer from the sharp briers or painful thorns of all who surround and scorn them. Then they will know that I am the sovereign LORD.

But Peter and John replied,“ Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,

Then out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth.They were told not to damage the grass of the earth, or any green plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their forehead.The locusts were not given permission to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and their torture was like that of a scorpion when it stings a person.In those days people will seek death, but will not be able to find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.

Listen to me, you who know what is right, you people who are aware of my law! Don’t be afraid of the insults of men; don’t be discouraged because of their abuse!

I reported,“ All of them are the most stubborn of rebels! They are as hard as bronze or iron. They go about telling lies. They all deal corruptly.
