Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die.

They will live because they thought it over and decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die.

Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.“ But you ask,‘ How can we return when we have never gone away?’

Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.“ But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.“ His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time.‘ Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded.But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.“ When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said,‘ You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me.Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.“ That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”

“ Therefore, give the people of Israel this message from the Sovereign Lord: Do you plan to pollute yourselves just as your ancestors did? Do you intend to keep prostituting yourselves by worshiping vile images?

I was a father to the poor and assisted strangers who needed help.

So obey my instructions, and do not defile yourselves by committing any of these detestable practices that were committed by the people who lived in the land before you. I am the Lord your God.”

“ Then you will give them the Lord’s reply:‘ It is because your ancestors were unfaithful to me. They worshiped other gods and served them. They abandoned me and did not obey my word.And you are even worse than your ancestors! You stubbornly follow your own evil desires and refuse to listen to me.So I will throw you out of this land and send you into a foreign land where you and your ancestors have never been. There you can worship idols day and night— and I will grant you no favors!’

He gave justice and help to the poor and needy, and everything went well for him. Isn’t that what it means to know me?” says the Lord.

You must obey all my regulations and be careful to obey my decrees, for I am the Lord your God.

When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins.

“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you build tombs for the prophets your ancestors killed, and you decorate the monuments of the godly people your ancestors destroyed.Then you say,‘ If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would never have joined them in killing the prophets.’“ But in saying that, you testify against yourselves that you are indeed the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.Go ahead and finish what your ancestors started.Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell?

Lord, you are my strength and fortress, my refuge in the day of trouble! Nations from around the world will come to you and say,“ Our ancestors left us a foolish heritage, for they worshiped worthless idols.

“‘ King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’

You must obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. This applies both to native born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you.
