Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

“ You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions— it is by grace you have been saved.

God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

For he says to Moses,“ I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you,‘ Fall prostrate that we may walk on you.’ And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked on.”

The Lord said,“ I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey— the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

But you are cast out of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain, with those pierced by the sword, those who descend to the stones of the pit. Like a corpse trampled underfoot,

Then my enemy will see it and will be covered with shame, she who said to me,“ Where is the Lord your God?” My eyes will see her downfall; even now she will be trampled underfoot like mire in the streets.

He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.”When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it,they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings:“ Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”

‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.

and say to them:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore with uplifted hand to the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hand I said to them,“ I am the Lord your God.”On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.And I said to them,“ Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”“‘ But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.Therefore I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.

How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’

He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.They performed his signs among them, his wonders in the land of Ham.He sent darkness and made the land dark— for had they not rebelled against his words?He turned their waters into blood, causing their fish to die.Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land;he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country.He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number;they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil.Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold, and from among their tribes no one faltered.

After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,“ The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you.
