Your older sister was Samaria. She lived north of you with her daughters. Your younger sister was Sodom. She lived south of you with her daughters.

And your elder sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters.

“ Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters in the north. Your younger sister was Sodom, who lived with her daughters in the south.

The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood.In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the Lord.The Lord said to me,“ Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah.

Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of my covenant with you.

Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.

As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.“‘ Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

“‘ However, I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort.And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride,

Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt.( This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

“ Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.

In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

“ How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused.

So I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were shocked by your lewd conduct.

All this is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the people of Israel. What is Jacob’s transgression? Is it not Samaria? What is Judah’s high place? Is it not Jerusalem?

The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur— nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.

and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

The punishment of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment without a hand turned to help her.

So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup into your hand.“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:“ You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup large and deep; it will bring scorn and derision, for it holds so much.You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, the cup of ruin and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria.

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela( that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim

“ It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.“ It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city— which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt— where also their Lord was crucified.

Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness.

Then the Lord said,“ The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievousthat I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.Then Abraham approached him and said:“ Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?Far be it from you to do such a thing— to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”The Lord said,“ If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”Then Abraham spoke up again:“ Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”“ If I find forty- five there,” he said,“ I will not destroy it.”Once again he spoke to him,“ What if only forty are found there?” He said,“ For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”Then he said,“ May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?” He answered,“ I will not do it if I find thirty there.”Abraham said,“ Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said,“ For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”Then he said,“ May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered,“ For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”

Unless the Lord Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!

Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah— from the Lord out of the heavens.Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities— and also the vegetation in the land.
