But thou didst trust in thy beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy whoredoms on every one that passed by; his it was.

“ But you were confident in your beauty and acted like a prostitute because of your fame. You lavished your sexual favors on everyone who passed by. Your beauty became his.

“ For of old I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds; And you said,‘ I will not transgress,’ When on every high hill and under every green tree You lay down, playing the harlot.

You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry.

Also behind the doors and their posts You have set up your remembrance; For you have uncovered yourself to those other than Me, And have gone up to them; You have enlarged your bed And made a covenant with them; You have loved their bed, Where you saw their nudity.

They committed harlotry in Egypt, They committed harlotry in their youth; Their breasts were there embraced, Their virgin bosom was there pressed.

Do not trust in these lying words, saying,‘ The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these.’

How the faithful city has become a harlot! It was full of justice; Righteousness lodged in it, But now murderers.

When the Lord began to speak by Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea:“ Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry And children of harlotry, For the land has committed great harlotry By departing from the Lord.”

She has never given up her harlotry brought from Egypt, For in her youth they had lain with her, Pressed her virgin bosom, And poured out their immorality upon her.

But they rebelled against Me and would not obey Me. They did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said,‘ I will pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.’

And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people,“ It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!”

In that day you shall not be shamed for any of your deeds In which you transgress against Me; For then I will take away from your midst Those who rejoice in your pride, And you shall no longer be haughty In My holy mountain.

Then I alienated Myself from her, As I had alienated Myself from her sister.“ Yet she multiplied her harlotry In calling to remembrance the days of her youth, When she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.For she lusted for her paramours, Whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys, And whose issue is like the issue of horses.Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, When the Egyptians pressed your bosom Because of your youthful breasts.

For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

Her heads judge for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No harm can come upon us.”

For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had feared other gods,

“ Hear this, O house of Jacob, Who are called by the name of Israel, And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah; Who swear by the name of the Lord, And make mention of the God of Israel, But not in truth or in righteousness;

Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

Then the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the people of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the Lord and did not serve Him.

For they shall eat, but not have enough; They shall commit harlotry, but not increase; Because they have ceased obeying the Lord.

And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.And the Lord said to Moses,“ Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said,‘ This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’”And the Lord said to Moses,“ I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.”Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said:“ Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?Why should the Egyptians speak, and say,‘ He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people.Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them,‘ I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses,“ There is a noise of war in the camp.”But he said:“ It is not the noise of the shout of victory, Nor the noise of the cry of defeat, But the sound of singing I hear.”So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.And Moses said to Aaron,“ What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?”So Aaron said,“ Do not let the anger of my Lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.For they said to me,‘ Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’And I said to them,‘ Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained( for Aaron had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies),then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said,“ Whoever is on the Lord’s side— come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.And he said to them,“ Thus says the Lord God of Israel:‘ Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’”So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.Then Moses said,“ Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people,“ You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”Then Moses returned to the Lord and said,“ Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold!Yet now, if You will forgive their sin— but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”And the Lord said to Moses,“ Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.”So the Lord plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made.

and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger.

For he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; he raised up altars for Baal, and made a wooden image, as Ahab king of Israel had done; and he worshiped all the host of heaven and served them.

When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die.

But they mingled with the Gentiles And learned their works;

“ They say,‘ If a man divorces his wife, And she goes from him And becomes another man’s, May he return to her again?’ Would not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the harlot with many lovers; Yet return to Me,” says the Lord.

“ But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; You grew fat, you grew thick, You are obese! Then he forsook God who made him, And scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

and do not think to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

and say to Tyre,‘ You who are situated at the entrance of the sea, merchant of the peoples on many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:“ O Tyre, you have said,‘ I am perfect in beauty.’
