“ Son of man, how is the wood of a vine different from that of a branch from any of the trees in the forest?

“人子啊！葡萄树的木料怎能胜过树林中的枝子呢？

人子歟、葡萄樹在眾木中、葡萄枝在叢林中、有何長乎、

人子、葡萄之樹、豈得於林中眾木、等量齊觀乎。

“ Son of man, how is the wood of a vine different from the wood of any tree in the forest?

“ Son of man, how does the wood of the vine surpass any wood, the vine branch that is among the trees of the forest?

“ Son of man, how does a grapevine compare to a tree? Is a vine’s wood as useful as the wood of a tree?

“ Son of man, how does the wood of the vine, that branch among the trees of the forest, compare to any other wood?

“ Son of man, how is the wood of the vine better than any wood of a branch which is among the trees of the forest?

“ Son of man, how is the wood of the vine better than any other wood, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest?

Son of man, what is the vine- tree more than any tree, the vine- branch which is among the trees of the forest?

“ Son of man, how does the wood of the vine, that branch among the trees of the forest, compare to any other wood?

Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree,[ or than] a branch which is among the trees of the forest?

“ Son of man, of all the woody branches among the trees of the forest, what happens to the wood of the vine?

“ Son of man, what is the vine tree more than any tree, the vine- branch which is among the trees of the forest?

I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.“ Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.”The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he adorned his sacred stones.

You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.Its branches reached as far as the Sea, its shoots as far as the River.Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes?Boars from the forest ravage it, and insects from the fields feed on it.Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine,the root your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself.Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; at your rebuke your people perish.

I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?

I went down to the grove of nut trees to look at the new growth in the valley, to see if the vines had budded or the pomegranates were in bloom.

He went on to tell the people this parable:“ A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over.‘ This is the heir,’ they said.‘ Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said,“ God forbid!”

“ I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.“ I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.

Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom— there I will give you my love.

Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon; he let out his vineyard to tenants. Each was to bring for its fruit a thousand shekels of silver.But my own vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.

Wail, you juniper, for the cedar has fallen; the stately trees are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashan; the dense forest has been cut down!

The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”

Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.

“ Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.“ The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.Last of all, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”“ He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied,“ and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

He sent him last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’“ But the tenants said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, you earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all your trees, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob, he displays his glory in Israel.

Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness.Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras.
