“ Therefore, son of man, pack up your belongings as if for exile. During the day, while they are watching, pretend to go into exile. Go from where you live to another place. Perhaps they will understand, although they are a rebellious house.

“ Therefore, son of man, pack your belongings for exile and in the daytime, as they watch, set out and go from where you are to another place. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious people.

“ Son of man, pack your belongings as if you were going on a long trip. Leave in the daytime. Let the people see you. Start out from where you are. Go to another place. Perhaps they will understand the meaning of what you are doing. But they will still refuse to obey me.

As for you, son of man, prepare for yourself an exile’s baggage, and go into exile by day in their sight. You shall go like an exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.

“ So now, son of man, pretend you are being sent into exile. Pack the few items an exile could carry, and leave your home to go somewhere else. Do this right in front of the people so they can see you. For perhaps they will pay attention to this, even though they are such rebels.

“ Now you, son of man, get your bags ready for exile and go into exile in their sight during the day. You will go into exile from your place to another place while they watch; perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.

So as for you, son of man, prepare for yourself baggage for exile and go into exile by day in their sight; that is, go into exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.

“ Therefore, son of man, prepare your belongings for captivity, and go into captivity by day in their sight. You shall go from your place into captivity to another place in their sight. It may be that they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.

Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.

“ Son of man, get your bags ready for exile and go into exile in their sight during the day. You will go into exile from your place to another place while they watch; perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.

Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they[ be] a rebellious house.

“ Therefore, you son of man, prepare your stuff for moving, and move by day in their sight. You shall move from your place to another place in their sight. It may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.

Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about all the disaster I intend to bring on them, they will all stop doing the evil things they have been doing. If they do, I will forgive their sins and the wicked things they have done.”

correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth

Maybe they will pay attention and each of them will stop living the evil way they do. If they do that, then I will forgo destroying them as I had intended to do because of the wicked things they have been doing.

Perhaps then they will ask the LORD for mercy and will all stop doing the evil things they have been doing. For the LORD has threatened to bring great anger and wrath against these people.”

Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my one dear son; perhaps they will respect him.’

Say to them,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: The prince will raise this burden in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel within it.’Say,‘ I am an object lesson for you. Just as I have done, it will be done to them; they will go into exile and captivity.’“ The prince who is among them will raise his belongings onto his shoulder in darkness, and will go out. He will dig a hole in the wall to leave through. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land with his eyes.

Over and over again the LORD has sent his servants the prophets to you. But you have not listened or paid attention.He said through them,‘ Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and stop doing the evil things you are doing. If you do, I will allow you to continue to live here in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors as a lasting possession.Do not pay allegiance to other gods and worship and serve them. Do not make me angry by the things that you do. Then I will not cause you any harm.’So, now the LORD says,‘ You have not listened to me. But you have made me angry by the things that you have done. Thus you have brought harm on yourselves.’

The LORD told me,“ Make a yoke out of leather straps and wooden crossbars and put it on your neck.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

The LORD told Jeremiah,“ Go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Take with you some of the leaders of the people and some of the leaders of the priests.Go out to the part of the Hinnom Valley which is near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Announce there what I tell you.Say,‘ Listen to what the LORD says, you kings of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem! The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,“ I will bring a disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it ring!I will do so because these people have rejected me and have defiled this place. They have offered sacrifices in it to other gods which neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah knew anything about. They have filled it with the blood of innocent children.They have built places here for worship of the god Baal so that they could sacrifice their children as burnt offerings to him in the fire. Such sacrifices are something I never commanded them to make! They are something I never told them to do! Indeed, such a thing never even entered my mind!So I, the LORD, say:“ The time will soon come that people will no longer call this place Topheth or the Hinnom Valley. But they will call this valley the Valley of Slaughter!In this place I will thwart the plans of the people of Judah and Jerusalem. I will deliver them over to the power of their enemies who are seeking to kill them. They will die by the sword at the hands of their enemies. I will make their dead bodies food for the birds and wild beasts to eat.I will make this city an object of horror, a thing to be hissed at. All who pass by it will be filled with horror and will hiss out their scorn because of all the disasters that have happened to it.I will reduce the people of this city to desperate straits during the siege imposed on it by their enemies who are seeking to kill them. I will make them so desperate that they will eat the flesh of their own sons and daughters and the flesh of one another.”’”The LORD continued,“ Now break the jar in front of those who have come here with you.Tell them the LORD who rules over all says,‘ I will do just as Jeremiah has done. I will smash this nation and this city as though it were a potter’s vessel which is broken beyond repair. The dead will be buried here in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.’I, the LORD, say:‘ That is how I will deal with this city and its citizens. I will make it like Topheth.The houses in Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled by dead bodies just like this place, Topheth. For they offered sacrifice to the stars and poured out drink offerings to other gods on the roofs of those houses.’”Then Jeremiah left Topheth where the LORD had sent him to give that prophecy. He went to the LORD’s temple and stood in its courtyard and called out to all the people.“ The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,‘ I will soon bring on this city and all the towns surrounding it all the disaster I threatened to do to it. I will do so because they have stubbornly refused to pay any attention to what I have said!’”

“ And you, son of man, take a brick and set it in front of you. Inscribe a city on it– Jerusalem.Lay siege to it! Build siege works against it. Erect a siege ramp against it! Post soldiers outside it and station battering rams around it.Then for your part take an iron frying pan and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face toward it. It is to be under siege; you are to besiege it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.“ Also for your part lie on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. For the number of days you lie on your side you will bear their iniquity.I have determined that the number of the years of their iniquity are to be the number of days for you– 390 days. So bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.“ When you have completed these days, then lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah 40 days– I have assigned one day for each year.You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it.Look here, I will tie you up with ropes, so you cannot turn from one side to the other until you complete the days of your siege.“ As for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, put them in a single container, and make food from them for yourself. For the same number of days that you lie on your side– 390 days– you will eat it.The food you eat will be eight ounces a day by weight; you must eat it at fixed times.And you must drink water by measure, a pint and a half; you must drink it at fixed times.And you must eat the food like you would a barley cake. You must bake it in front of them over a fire made with dried human excrement.”And the LORD said,“ This is how the people of Israel will eat their unclean food among the nations where I will banish them.”And I said,“ Ah, sovereign LORD, I have never been ceremonially defiled before. I have never eaten a carcass or an animal torn by wild beasts; from my youth up, unclean meat has never entered my mouth.”So he said to me,“ All right then, I will substitute cow’s manure instead of human excrement. You will cook your food over it.”Then he said to me,“ Son of man, I am about to remove the bread supply in Jerusalem. They will eat their bread ration anxiously, and they will drink their water ration in terrorbecause they will lack bread and water. Each one will be terrified, and they will rot for their iniquity.

But the worker answered him,‘ Sir, leave it alone this year too, until I dig around it and put fertilizer on it.Then if it bears fruit next year, very well, but if not, you can cut it down.’”

I wish that they were wise and could understand this, and that they could comprehend what will happen to them.”

The LORD said to me,“ Go and buy some linen shorts and put them on. Do not put them in water.”So I bought the shorts as the LORD had told me to do and put them on.Then the LORD spoke to me again and said,“ Take the shorts that you bought and are wearing and go at once to Perath. Bury the shorts there in a crack in the rocks.”So I went and buried them at Perath as the LORD had ordered me to do.Many days later the LORD said to me,“ Go at once to Perath and get the shorts I ordered you to bury there.”So I went to Perath and dug up the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I found that they were ruined; they were good for nothing.Then the LORD said to me,“ I, the LORD, say:‘ This shows how I will ruin the highly exalted position in which Judah and Jerusalem take pride.These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said. They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So they will become just like these linen shorts which are good for nothing.For,’ I say,‘ just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of Judah tightly to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise. But they would not obey me.

If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever.

Say to them,‘ As surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but prefer that the wicked change his behavior and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil deeds! Why should you die, O house of Israel?’

“ Go down at once to the potter’s house. I will speak to you further there.”So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working at his wheel.Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit.Then the LORD said to me,“ I, the LORD, say:‘ O nation of Israel, can I not deal with you as this potter deals with the clay? In my hands, you, O nation of Israel, are just like the clay in this potter’s hand.’There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom.But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it.And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom.But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it.So now, tell the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem this: The LORD says,‘ I am preparing to bring disaster on you! I am making plans to punish you. So, every one of you, stop the evil things you have been doing. Correct the way you have been living and do what is right.’But they just keep saying,‘ We do not care what you say! We will do whatever we want to do! We will continue to behave wickedly and stubbornly!’”

If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands!
