“ People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’And the answer will be:‘ Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’” (niv)

“‘ But I will spare some, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations.Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember me— how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols. “ Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord are on the sinful kingdom. I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not totally destroy the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord.“ For I will give the command, and I will shake the people of Israel among all the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a pebble will reach the ground. Unless the Lord Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah. (niv)

This is what the Lord says:“ The whole land will be ruined, though I will not destroy it completely. (niv)

we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.“ Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame— the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you.We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him;we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.“ Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you.You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. (niv)

So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. (niv)

From our youth shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our ancestors’ labor— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our ancestors; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the Lord our God.” (niv)

Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous. (niv)

I am with you and will save you,’ declares the Lord.‘ Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only in due measure; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’ (niv)

And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.” (niv)

“ If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. (niv)

And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down. (niv)

All the nations will ask:“ Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?”And the answer will be:“ It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them.Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.In furious anger and in great wrath the Lord uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.” (niv)

“ But if you or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’People will answer,‘ Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them— that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.’” (niv)

Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:“ Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. (niv)

“‘ But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors— their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me,which made me hostile toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies— then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, (niv)

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (niv)

And what was God’s answer to him?“ I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. (niv)

I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. (niv)

Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. (niv)
