當時，他們人丁有限，數目稀少，並且在那地為寄居的。

我家在神面前並非如此；神卻與我立永遠的約。這約凡事堅穩，關乎我的一切救恩和我一切所想望的，他豈不為我成就嗎？

「我在你們中間是外人，是寄居的。求你們在這裏給我一塊地，我好埋葬我的死人，使她不在我眼前。」

「我與你立約：你要作多國的父。

在這地方，神並沒有給他產業，連立足之地也沒有給他；但應許要將這地賜給他和他的後裔為業；那時他還沒有兒子。
