So the slave drivers and foremen went out and told the people:“ This is what Pharaoh says: I will not provide any more straw for you.

The Israelite foremen could see that they were in serious trouble when they were told,“ You must not reduce the number of bricks you make each day.”

So the Egyptians made the Israelites their slaves. They appointed brutal slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor. They forced them to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian slave drivers continued to push hard.“ Meet your daily quota of bricks, just as you did when we provided you with straw!” they demanded.Then they whipped the Israelite foremen they had put in charge of the work crews.“ Why haven’t you met your quotas either yesterday or today?” they demanded.So the Israelite foremen went to Pharaoh and pleaded with him.“ Please don’t treat your servants like this,” they begged.

To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir, while Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

So I took the wise and respected men you had selected from your tribes and appointed them to serve as judges and officials over you. Some were responsible for a thousand people, some for a hundred, some for fifty, and some for ten.

Then the Lord told him,“ I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering.

Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God.

Then all the Israelites— foreigners and native born alike— along with the elders, officers, and judges, were divided into two groups. One group stood in front of Mount Gerizim, the other in front of Mount Ebal. Each group faced the other, and between them stood the Levitical priests carrying the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant. This was all done according to the commands that Moses, the servant of the Lord, had previously given for blessing the people of Israel.

Uzziah had an army of well trained warriors, ready to march into battle, unit by unit. This army had been mustered and organized by Jeiel, the secretary of the army, and his assistant, Maaseiah. They were under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king’s officials.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Gather before me seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel. Bring them to the Tabernacle to stand there with you.

The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are always cruel.

“ Appoint judges and officials for yourselves from each of your tribes in all the towns the Lord your God is giving you. They must judge the people fairly.
