The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told,“ You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.”

So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.

The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying,“ Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.”And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding,“ Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh:“ Why have you treated your servants this way?

and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.

So I took the leading men of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them to have authority over you— as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens and as tribal officials.

The Lord said to Moses:“ Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you.

The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly.
