會堂的主管因為耶穌在安息日治病，就很生氣，對眾人說：「有六天應當做工，那六天之內可以來求醫，在安息日卻不可。」主回答他：「假冒為善的人哪，難道你們各人在安息日不解開槽上的牛和驢，牽去喝水嗎？

以色列人還在曠野的時候，發現有一個人在安息日撿柴。發現他撿柴的人把他帶到摩西、亞倫以及全會眾那裏。他們把他收押在監裏，因為還不知道要怎樣懲罰他。耶和華吩咐摩西說：「這人應當處死；全會眾要在營外用石頭打死他。」於是全會眾把他帶到營外，用石頭打死他，是照耶和華所吩咐摩西的。

任何人干犯摩西的律法，憑兩個或三個證人，尚且必須處死，不得寬赦，更何況踐踏神兒子的人，他們將那使他成聖之約的血當作不潔淨，又褻慢施恩的聖靈的人，你們想，他不該受更嚴厲的懲罰嗎？

所以猶太人迫害耶穌，因為他在安息日做了這些事。

既然那藉着天使所傳的話是確定的，凡違背不聽從的，都受了該受的報應；我們若忽略這麼大的救恩，怎能逃避呢？這拯救起先是主親自講的，後來是聽見的人給我們證實了。

「『當守安息日為聖日，正如耶和華－你神所吩咐的。六日要勞碌做你一切的工，但第七日是向耶和華－你的神當守的安息日。這一日，你和你的兒女、僕婢、牛、驢、牲畜，以及你城裏寄居的客旅，都不可做任何的工，使你的僕婢可以和你一樣休息。你要記念你在埃及地作過奴僕，耶和華－你的神用大能的手和伸出來的膀臂領你從那裏出來。因此，耶和華－你的神吩咐你守安息日。
