Then the LORD said to Moses:“ I have seen this people. Look what a stiff-necked people they are!So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation.”

I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and spacious, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

Understand, therefore, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is about to give you this good land as a possession, for you are a stubborn people!Remember– don’t ever forget– how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him.At Horeb you provoked him and he was angry enough with you to destroy you.When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I remained there forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing.The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God, and on them was everything he said to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that assembly.Now at the end of the forty days and nights the LORD presented me with the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.And he said to me,“ Get up, go down at once from here because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have sinned! They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a cast metal image.”Moreover, he said to me,“ I have taken note of these people; they are a stubborn lot!

And Moses said to him,“ If your presence does not go with us, do not take us up from here.For how will it be known then that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us, so that we will be distinguished, I and your people, from all the people who are on the face of the earth?”The LORD said to Moses,“ I will do this thing also that you have requested, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”

Listen and warn the family of Jacob! The sovereign LORD, the God who commands armies, is speaking!“ Certainly when I punish Israel for their covenant transgressions, I will destroy Bethel’s altars. The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.

Then I will keep the promise I swore on oath to your ancestors to give them a land flowing with milk and honey.” That is the very land that you still live in today.’” And I responded,“ Amen! Let it be so, LORD!”

“ Get away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!” But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.

“ Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”

Suppose I tell the righteous that he will certainly live, but he becomes confident in his righteousness and commits iniquity. None of his righteous deeds will be remembered; because of the iniquity he has committed he will die.Suppose I say to the wicked,‘ You must certainly die,’ but he turns from his sin and does what is just and right.He returns what was taken in pledge, pays back what he has stolen, and follows the statutes that give life, committing no iniquity. He will certainly live– he will not die.None of the sins he has committed will be counted against him. He has done what is just and right; he will certainly live.

Indeed, for forty years the Israelites traveled through the desert until all the men old enough to fight when they left Egypt, the ones who had disobeyed the LORD, died off. For the LORD had sworn a solemn oath to them that he would not let them see the land he had sworn on oath to give them, a land rich in milk and honey.

“ You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!

If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us– a land that is flowing with milk and honey.

They told Moses,“ We went to the land where you sent us. It is indeed flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

When God saw their actions– they turned from their evil way of living!– God relented concerning the judgment he had threatened them with and he did not destroy them.

Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us?

Then the LORD relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

I will strike them with the pestilence, and I will disinherit them; I will make you into a nation that is greater and mightier than they!”

Take heed because of him, and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgressions, for my name is in him.

When Jonah began to enter the city one day’s walk, he announced,“ At the end of forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

When the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, then you will keep this ceremony in this month.

When I say to the wicked,“ You will certainly die,” and you do not warn him– you do not speak out to warn the wicked to turn from his wicked deed and wicked lifestyle so that he may live– that wicked person will die for his iniquity, but I will hold you accountable for his death.But as for you, if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wicked deed and from his wicked lifestyle, he will die for his iniquity but you will have saved your own life.

“ I said,‘ I want to cut them in pieces. I want to make people forget they ever existed.But I fear the reaction of their enemies, for their adversaries would misunderstand and say,“ Our power is great, and the LORD has not done all this!”’

Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says,‘ I really did say that your house and your ancestor’s house would serve me forever.’ But now the LORD says,‘ May it never be! For I will honor those who honor me, but those who despise me will be cursed!

So I have said to you: You yourselves will possess their land and I myself will give it to you for a possession, a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God who has set you apart from the other peoples.

and said,“ If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord go among us, for we are a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom.But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it.And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom.But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it.

Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not committed and faithful to God.
