在那些日子裡，他們做了一個牛犢，把祭物獻給那偶像，並且因自己手所做的而歡樂。於是神轉身離開，任憑他們事奉天象，正如先知書所說：‘以色列家啊，你們在曠野四十年，豈是將祭牲和祭物獻給我呢？

住在地上的人為了他們的緣故，就歡喜快樂，彼此送禮，因為這兩位先知曾經使他們受痛苦。

他們在各祭壇旁，躺臥在別人抵押的衣服上面；在他們神的殿中，飲用拿剝削回來的錢所買的酒。

約書亞聽見人民呼喊的聲音的時候，就對摩西說：“營裡有戰爭的聲音。”摩西回答：“這不是戰勝的呼聲，也不是戰敗的呼聲；我聽見的是歌唱的聲音。”摩西走近營前的時候，看見了那牛犢，又看見了有人唱歌跳舞，他就發烈怒，把兩塊法版從他的手中摔掉，在山下把它們摔碎了。

“我必使你們歡樂的節期變為悲哀的日子，把你們的歌聲都變為哀哭。我必使你們各人腰束麻帶，頭都剃光了；我必使你們悲哀，好像喪了獨生子，自始至終都是痛苦的。

摩西把耶和華的一切話都記下了；清早起來，在山下築了一座祭壇，按著以色列十二支派立了十二根柱子。又派了以色列人中的青年人去獻燔祭，又向耶和華殺牛獻為平安祭。
