“ Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.” And they fell facedown.Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Take your censer and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord; the plague has started.”So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them.He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.

I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.

My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God.“ Lord,” he said,“ why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?

In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”The Lord replied,“ I have forgiven them, as you asked.

Then the man said,“ Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied,“ I will not let you go unless you bless me.”The man asked him,“ What is your name?”“ Jacob,” he answered.Then the man said,“ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

Then the Lord said to me,“ Do not pray for the well-being of this people.

Then he said,“ May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered,“ For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.

But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out,“ O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?”

Then the Lord said to me:“ Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go!
