“ When you take a census of the children of Israel, according to those who are counted among them, then each man shall give a ransom for his soul to Yahweh, when you count them; that there be no plague among them when you count them.

“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

“ Make a list of the Israelites and count them. When you do, each one must pay the Lord for his life at the time he is counted. Then a plague will not come on them when you count them.

We have brought Yahweh’s offering, what every man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh.”

Joab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. The number wasn’t put into the account in the chronicles of king David.

The silver of those who were counted of the congregation was one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred seventy- five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary:a beka a head, that is, half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, for everyone who passed over to those who were counted, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty men.

none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.

even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ,

The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him,“ Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the Tent of the Testimony?”

either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

Again Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying,“ Go, count Israel and Judah.”The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him,“ Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.”Joab said to the king,“ Now may Yahweh your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.They passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer;then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan, and around to Sidon,and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba.So when they had gone back and forth through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.Joab gave up the sum of the counting of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people. David said to Yahweh,“ I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, Yahweh, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”When David rose up in the morning, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and speak to David,‘ Yahweh says,“ I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him,“ Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”David said to Gad,“ I am in distress. Let us fall now into Yahweh’s hand; for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into man’s hand.”So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.

“ Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all who are able to go out to war in Israel.”Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,“ Take a census, from twenty years old and upward, as Yahweh commanded Moses and the children of Israel.” These are those that came out of the land of Egypt.

“ Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one,from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall count them by their divisions.With you there shall be a man of every tribe, each one head of his fathers’ house.These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur.

who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony in its own times,

Don’t let riches entice you to wrath, neither let the great size of a bribe turn you aside.

then God is gracious to him, and says,‘ Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.’

So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
