“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

核會眾所得之銀、按聖所權衡、計一百他連得、一千七百七十五舍客勒、約十二萬三千八百八十七兩零五錢凡被核者、自二十歲以上、共計六十萬三千五百五十人、按聖所之權衡、每人各獻舍客勒之半、即一比加、

人實不能贖己之兄弟、亦不能為彼奉贖金於天主、

即如人子來、非以役人、乃役於人、且舍其生以贖眾也、○

蓋爾之妄行、由爾祖所傳者、爾得贖以脫之、知非以金銀可壞之物、乃以基督之寶血、如無疵無玷羔羊之血、

王召祭司長耶何耶大謂之曰、昔主之僕摩西命以色列會眾、為法幕獻銀、何不使利未人將猶大人及耶路撒冷民、循此例所捐之銀攜之至、

或饑饉三年、或敗於敵前、被敵以刀追殺三月、或主之刀即疫癘、流行爾國中、主之使者於以色列遍地、滅民三日、此三者、爾何擇、今爾思之、明以告我、俾我歸而覆命於遣我者、

主復怒以色列人、感動大衛、使之命人往核以色列人及猶大人之數、王命其軍長約押曰、爾遍行以色列各支派、自但至別是巴、核數斯民、使我知其數、約押曰、無論民數多寡、惟願主爾之天主增益百倍、並使我主我王目睹之、我主我王何為欲行此事乎、第王之命促約押與諸將、約押與諸將退於王前、遂往核數以色列民、濟約但河、列營在迦得谷中亞羅珥城之右、與牙設相對、又至基列、與他停合示地、及但雅安、環繞而至西頓、又至瑣珥、即推羅鞏固之城鞏固之城或作保障與希未迦南之諸邑、又往猶大南方至別是巴、遍行全地、歷九月二十日、乃返耶路撒冷、約押以民數告王、以色列能臨戰臨陣原文作拔刀者八十萬、猶大人五十萬、大衛既核民數、中心不安、禱於主曰、我行此愚甚、大干罪戾、求主宥僕之愆尤、大衛夙興時、主命先知迦得、即在大衛前為先見者、曰、往告大衛曰、主如是云、我有三災、必降其一於爾、爾其自擇之、迦得遂來見大衛、謂之曰、或爾國中饑饉七年、或爾遁於敵前、敵逐爾三月、或於爾國中有瘟疫三日、此三者爾何擇、今爾思而視之、明以告我、俾我歸而復命於遣我者、

以色列會眾、循其宗族、凡二十歲以上能臨陣者、當核其數、摩西與祭司以利亞撒、在摩押平原、約但河濱、耶利哥相對之處、宣告曰、凡二十歲以上者當核其數、循主諭摩西與出伊及以色列人之命、或作循主諭摩西之命出自伊及之以色列人其數如左、

爾當按以色列會眾之門戶宗族、凡諸男丁、按名而核其數、以色列人自二十歲以上、凡能臨陣者、爾與亞倫必按其隊伍而計之、每一支派中、各當有一人助爾、皆為本支派之族長、此當助爾者、其人之名乃此、屬流便支派示丟珥子以利蓿、

舍己贖眾、此道及時已明證、

慎哉、恐天主震怒、遽加譴責、雖多金亦不得贖、

天主則矜憫其人曰、可援之、免其入墓、我已得以贖之者、

於是主降疫癘於以色列人中、以色列人中死者七萬、

蓋人子來、非以役人、乃役於人、且舍生以贖眾、○
