“ When you take a census of the Israelites to register them, each of the men must pay a ransom for his life to the LORD as they are registered. Then no plague will come on them as they are registered.

“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

“ Make a list of the Israelites and count them. When you do, each one must pay the Lord for his life at the time he is counted. Then a plague will not come on them when you count them.

“ When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them.

“ Whenever you take a census of the people of Israel, each man who is counted must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord. Then no plague will strike the people as you count them.

“ When you take a census of the sons of Israel to count them, then each one of them shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you count them, so that there will be no plague among them when you count them.

“ When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you number them, that there may be no plague among them when you number them.

When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel, according to those that are numbered of them, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto Jehovah, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

“ When you take a census of the Israelites to register them, each of the men must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord as they are registered. Then no plague will come on them as they are registered.

When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when[ thou] numberest them.

“ When you take a census of the Israelites according to their number, then each man is to pay a ransom for his life to the LORD when you number them, so that there will be no plague among them when you number them.

“ When you take a census of the children of Israel, according to those who are counted among them, then each man shall give a ransom for his soul to Yahweh, when you count them; that there be no plague among them when you count them.

So we have presented to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man found— armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces— to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”

Joab son of Zeruiah began to count them, but he didn’t complete it. There was wrath against Israel because of this census, and the number was not entered in the Historical Record of King David.

The silver from those of the community who were registered was 7,544 pounds, according to the sanctuary shekel—one-fifth of an ounce per man, that is, half a shekel according to the sanctuary shekel, from everyone twenty years old or more who had crossed over to the registered group, 603,550 men.

Yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his ransom to God—

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold,but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.

So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said,“ Why haven’t you required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by the LORD’s servant Moses and the assembly of Israel for the tent of the testimony?

three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD— a plague on the land, the angel of the LORD bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”

The LORD’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say,“ Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”So the king said to Joab, the commander of his army,“ Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the troops so I can know their number.”Joab replied to the king,“ May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times more than they are— while my lord the king looks on! But why does my lord the king want to do this?”Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army left the king’s presence to register the troops of Israel.They crossed the Jordan and camped in Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and then proceeded toward Gad and Jazer.They went to Gilead and to the land of the Hittites and continued on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.They went to the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Afterward, they went to the Negev of Judah at Beer-sheba.When they had gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.Joab gave the king the total of the registration of the troops. There were eight hundred thousand valiant armed men from Israel and five hundred thousand men from Judah.David’s conscience troubled him after he had taken a census of the troops. He said to the LORD,“ I have sinned greatly in what I’ve done. Now, LORD, because I’ve been very foolish, please take away your servant’s guilt.”When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to the prophet Gad, David’s seer:“ Go and say to David,‘ This is what the LORD says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.’”So Gad went to David, told him the choices, and asked him,“ Do you want three years of famine to come on your land, to flee from your foes three months while they pursue you, or to have a plague in your land three days? Now, consider carefully what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”David answered Gad,“ I have great anxiety. Please, let us fall into the LORD’s hands because his mercies are great, but don’t let me fall into human hands.”So the LORD sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men died.

“ Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their ancestral families of those twenty years old or more who can serve in Israel’s army.”So Moses and the priest Eleazar said to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho,“ Take a census of those twenty years old or more, as the LORD had commanded Moses and the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt.”

“ Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of every male one by one.You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years old or more by their military divisions— everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral family.These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben;

who gave himself as a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time.

Be careful that no one lures you with riches; do not let a large ransom lead you astray.

and to be gracious to him and say,“ Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom,”

So the LORD sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men died.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
