“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

“ Make a list of the Israelites and count them. When you do, each one must pay the Lord for his life at the time he is counted. Then a plague will not come on them when you count them.

“ When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them.

現在我們把耶和華的供物，都送來了，就是我們各人所得的金器、腳鍊子、鐲子、打印戒指、耳環、手釧，好在耶和華面前，為我們自己贖罪。”

洗魯雅的兒子約押開始數點，但還沒有完成，為了這事耶和華的忿怒就臨到以色列人身上，所以以色列的人數沒有記在大衛王的年錄上。

會眾中被數點的人所出的銀子，按照聖所的標準，共有三千四百三十公斤。凡是按著次序被數點的人，從二十歲以上的，有六十萬三千五百五十人，按著聖所的標準，每人納銀六克。

但他們沒有一個能把他的兄弟贖回，或把他的贖價交給神，

正如人子來，不是要受人的服事，而是要服事人，並且要捨命，作許多人的贖價。”

因為知道你們得贖，脫去你們祖先傳下的妄行，不是憑著能壞的金銀等物，而是憑著基督的寶血，就像無瑕疵無玷污的羊羔的血。

於是王把大祭司耶何耶大召來，對他說：“你為甚麼不命令利未人把耶和華的僕人摩西和以色列的會眾，為法櫃的會幕規定的稅款，從猶大和耶路撒冷徵收回來，作修殿的費用呢？”

或是三年的饑荒；或是在你敵人面前逃亡，被你仇敵的刀劍追殺三個月；或是耶和華的刀攻擊三天，就是在國中發生瘟疫三日，耶和華的使者在以色列的四境施行毀滅。’現在你考慮一下，我該用甚麼話回覆那差派我來的。”

耶和華又向以色列人發怒，就激動大衛，使他們受害，說：“你去數點一下以色列和猶大的人數吧！”王就對約押和跟隨他的軍官說：“你們走遍以色列各支派，從但到別是巴，數點人民，我好知道人民的數目。”約押回答王：“無論人民有多少，願耶和華你的神再增加一百倍，又願我主我王親眼看見。不過，我主我王為甚麼喜歡這事呢？”但是王的命令約押和眾軍官不敢不從。於是約押和眾軍官從王面前出去，數點以色列的人民。他們過了約旦河，就在谷中那座亞羅珥城的右邊安營。後來他們經過迦得，直到雅謝，然後又到了基列和他停‧合示地，再到了但‧雅安，並繞過了西頓，來到推羅的堡壘，以及希未人和迦南人所有的城市。最後，他們出到猶大的南端別是巴去了。以後，他們走遍了全地，過了九個月又二十天，就回到耶路撒冷。約押把數點人民的數目向王呈報：在以色列中能拔刀的勇士共有八十萬人；猶大共有五十萬人。大衛數點了人民以後，良心一直不安，於是對耶和華說：“我作了這事，犯了大罪。耶和華啊！現在求你除去你僕人的罪孽，因為我作了非常糊塗的事！”大衛早晨起來；耶和華的話臨到迦得先知，就是大衛的先見，說：“你去告訴大衛說：‘耶和華這樣說：我給你三個選擇，你要選擇一個，我好向你施行。’”於是迦得來見大衛，問他說：“你要國中三年（按照《馬索拉文本》，“三年”作“七年”；現參照《七十士譯本》翻譯；參代上21:12）的饑荒呢？或是要在你敵人面前逃跑，被追趕三個月呢？或是要國中有三天的瘟疫呢？現在你要想想，決定我該用甚麼話回覆那差我來的。”大衛對迦得說：“我非常為難，我們情願落在耶和華的手裡，因為他有豐盛的憐憫。不要讓我落在人的手裡。”於是耶和華降瘟疫在以色列地，從早晨直到所定的時間；從但到別是巴，眾民中死了七萬人。

“你們要把以色列會眾，從二十歲以上，在以色列中能出去打仗的，按著他們的父家，計算數目。”於是，摩西和以利亞撒祭司在摩押曠野，就是在耶利哥附近的約旦河邊，告訴他們：“從二十歲以上的，你們都要登記數目。”這是照著耶和華吩咐摩西的。從埃及地出來的以色列人計有：

“你們要把以色列全體會眾，按著他們的宗族、父家，根據人名數目，統計人口；所有男丁，都要按著人口登記。在以色列中，凡是二十歲及以上，能出去打仗的，你和亞倫要按著他們的隊伍數點他們。每一個支派要有一人幫助你們；他們每一個都是他父家的首領。以下就是幫助你們的人的名字：屬流本支派的，有示丟珥的兒子以利蓿；

他捨了自己作萬人的贖價，到了適當的時候，這事就證實了。

你要小心不可讓忿怒激動你，以致侮慢神，也不要因贖價大而偏離正道。

恩待他，說：‘救贖他免下深坑；我已經得到了贖價。’

於是耶和華使瘟疫降在以色列人身上；以色列人死了七萬人。

因為人子來，不是要受人服事，而是要服事人，並且要捨命，作許多人的贖價。”
