“ Pay close attention to all my instructions. You must not call on the name of any other gods. Do not even speak their names.

Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

“ But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren.

Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them.

“ And on that day,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,“ I will erase idol worship throughout the land, so that even the names of the idols will be forgotten. I will remove from the land both the false prophets and the spirit of impurity that came with them.

O Israel, I will wipe the many names of Baal from your lips, and you will never mention them again.

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

But be very careful to obey all the commands and the instructions that Moses gave to you. Love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold firmly to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.”

Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names of their gods.

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.

So be very careful to love the Lord your God.

And if he continues to obey my commands and regulations as he does now, I will make his kingdom last forever.’“ So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel— the Lord’s assembly— I give you this charge. Be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, so that you may continue to possess this good land and leave it to your children as a permanent inheritance.“ And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.

It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.

Nebo, Baal meon, and Sibmah. They changed the names of some of the towns they conquered and rebuilt.

I said to myself,“ I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.”

Say this to those who worship other gods:“ Your so called gods, who did not make the heavens and earth, will vanish from the earth and from under the heavens.”

Break down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles and cut down their carved idols. Completely erase the names of their gods!

“ But be very careful! You did not see the Lord’s form on the day he spoke to you from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai.
