He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto Jehovah only, shall be utterly destroyed.

If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant,and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky,and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.

But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”

If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder,and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says,“ Let us follow other gods”( gods you have not known)“ and let us worship them,”you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. That prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying,“ Let us go and worship other gods”( gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known,gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other),do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them.You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people.Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live inthat troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying,“ Let us go and worship other gods”( gods you have not known),then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you,you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.

When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his handand followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;

But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.”

who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them.The Lord said to Moses,“ Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the Lord’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.
