“ Whoever sacrifices to any gods, except the Lord alone, is to be set apart for destruction.

“ He who sacrifices to any god, other than to the Lord alone, shall be utterly destroyed.

“ He who sacrifices to any god, except to the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto Jehovah only, shall be utterly destroyed.

He that sacrificeth unto[ any] god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

“ Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the LORD alone must be utterly destroyed.

“ He who sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh only, shall be utterly destroyed.

“ If a man or woman among you in one of your towns that the Lord your God will give you is discovered doing evil in the sight of the Lord your God and violating His covenantand has gone to worship other gods by bowing down to the sun, moon, or all the stars in the sky— which I have forbidden—and if you are told or hear about it, you must investigate it thoroughly. If the report turns out to be true that this detestable thing has happened in Israel,you must bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing and stone them to death.

But the prophet who dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods— that prophet must die.’

“ If a prophet or someone who has dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you,and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says,‘ Let us follow other gods,’ which you have not known,‘ and let us worship them,’do not listen to that prophet’s words or to that dreamer. For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul.You must follow the Lord your God and fear Him. You must keep His commands and listen to His voice; you must worship Him and remain faithful to Him.That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has urged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the place of slavery, to turn you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to walk. You must purge the evil from you.“ If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying,‘ Let us go and worship other gods’— which neither you nor your fathers have known,any of the gods of the peoples around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other—you must not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity, and do not spare him or shield him.Instead, you must kill him. Your hand is to be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.All Israel will hear and be afraid, and they will no longer do anything evil like this among you.“ If you hear it said about one of your cities the Lord your God is giving you to live in,that wicked men have sprung up among you, led the inhabitants of their city astray, and said,‘ Let us go and worship other gods,’ which you have not known,you are to inquire, investigate, and interrogate thoroughly. If the report turns out to be true that this detestable thing has happened among you,you must strike down the inhabitants of that city with the sword. Completely destroy everyone in it as well as its livestock with the sword.

When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,followed the Israelite man into the tent, and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman— through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped,

Since every good thing the Lord your God promised you has come about, so He will bring on you every bad thing until He has annihilated you from this good land the Lord your God has given you.If you break the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and go and worship other gods, and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land He has given you.”

The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor, and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.The Lord said to Moses,“ Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord so that His burning anger may turn away from Israel.”

The Lord listened to Israel’s request, the Canaanites were defeated, and Israel completely destroyed them and their cities. So they named the place Hormah.
