“ If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.

“ Suppose you buy a Hebrew servant. He must serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, you must set him free. He does not have to pay anything.

When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.

It shall not seem hard to you when you send him away free from you; for he has been worth a double hired servant in serving you six years. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all that you do.

And Moses commanded them, saying:“ At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles,

And I said to them,“ According to our ability we have redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?” Then they were silenced and found nothing to say.

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them:that every man should set free his male and female slave— a Hebrew man or woman— that no one should keep a Jewish brother in bondage.Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go.But afterward they changed their minds and made the male and female slaves return, whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male and female slaves.Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,“ Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:‘ I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,“ At the end of seven years let every man set free his Hebrew brother, who has been sold to him; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear.Then you recently turned and did what was right in My sight— every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor; and you made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name.Then you turned around and profaned My name, and every one of you brought back his male and female slaves, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, and brought them back into subjection, to be your male and female slaves.’“ Therefore thus says the Lord:‘ You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord—‘ to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth.

‘ And if one of your brethren who dwells by you becomes poor, and sells himself to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a slave.As a hired servant and a sojourner he shall be with you, and shall serve you until the Year of Jubilee.And then he shall depart from you— he and his children with him— and shall return to his own family. He shall return to the possession of his fathers.For they are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves.You shall not rule over him with rigor, but you shall fear your God.And as for your male and female slaves whom you may have— from the nations that are around you, from them you may buy male and female slaves.Moreover you may buy the children of the strangers who dwell among you, and their families who are with you, which they beget in your land; and they shall become your property.

“ At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.

But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then he may eat it.

And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”There were also some who said,“ We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine.”There were also those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”

A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying,“ Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.

Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine.

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed. He should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

And Esau said,“ Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said,“ Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
