“ If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.

“ Suppose you buy a Hebrew servant. He must serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, you must set him free. He does not have to pay anything.

When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.

“ It shall not seem difficult for you when you set him free, because he has given you six years with double the service of a hired worker; so the Lord your God will bless you in whatever you do.

Then Moses commanded them, saying,“ At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of the release of debts, at the Feast of Booths,

And I said to them,“ We, according to our ability, have redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?” Then they were silent and could not find a word to say.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem, to proclaim release to them:that each person was to set his male servant free and each his female servant, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, so that no one would keep them, his Jewish brother or sister, in bondage.And all the officials and all the people obeyed who had entered into the covenant that each person was to set his male servant free and each his female servant, so that no one would keep them in bondage any longer; they obeyed, and set them free.But afterward they turned around and took back the male servants and the female servants whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male servants and as female servants.Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says:‘ I made a covenant with your forefathers on the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, saying,“ At the end of seven years each of you shall set free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you and has served you for six years, and you shall send him out free from you.” But your forefathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear to Me.Although recently you had turned and done what is right in My sight, each one proclaiming release to his neighbor, and you had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name.Yet you turned and profaned My name, and each person took back his male servant and each his female servant whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your male and female servants.’“ Therefore this is what the Lord says:‘ You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming release, each one to his brother and each to his neighbor. Behold, I am proclaiming a release to you,’ declares the Lord,‘ to the sword, to the plague, and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

‘ Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service.He shall be with you as a hired worker, as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee.He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers.For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale.You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.As for your male and female slaves whom you may have— you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you.You may also acquire them from the sons of the foreign residents who reside among you, and from their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession.

“ At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.

but as for every slave that someone has purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat it.

Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let’s get grain so that we may eat and live.”And there were others who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.”There also were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.And now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

Now a woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying,“ Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves.”

But since he did not have the means to repay, his master commanded that he be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment be made.

Now may God give you of the dew of heaven, And of the fatness of the earth, And an abundance of grain and new wine;

For you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

If the sun has risen on him, there will be guilt for bloodshed on his account— A thief shall certainly make restitution; if he owns nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

Then Esau said,“ Is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has betrayed me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said,“ Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
