For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,

Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign

The men said to her,“ We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.

But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him,“ I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”Jesus said to him,“ You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High,and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”But to the wicked God says:“ What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?

This we will do to them: let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath that we swore to them.”

and the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name, and cursed. Then they brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.And they put him in custody, till the will of the Lord should be clear to them.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Bring out of the camp the one who cursed, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.And speak to the people of Israel, saying, Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin.Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear.
