“ You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

“ Do not make for yourself statues of gods that look like anything in the sky. They may not look like anything on the earth or in the waters either.

“ You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

“ You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.

Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.

Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

“ Take careful heed to yourselves, for you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire,lest you act corruptly and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of any figure: the likeness of male or female,the likeness of any animal that is on the earth or the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air,the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground or the likeness of any fish that is in the water beneath the earth.And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage.

‘ Cursed is the one who makes a carved or molded image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’“ And all the people shall answer and say,‘ Amen!’

Let all be put to shame who serve carved images, Who boast of idols. Worship Him, all you gods.

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.

‘ Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods: I am the Lord your God.

‘ You shall not make for yourself a carved image— any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

They shall be ashamed And also disgraced, all of them; They shall go in confusion together, Who are makers of idols.

But they are altogether dull-hearted and foolish; A wooden idol is a worthless doctrine.Silver is beaten into plates; It is brought from Tarshish, And gold from Uphaz, The work of the craftsman And of the hands of the metalsmith; Blue and purple are their clothing; They are all the work of skillful men.

Everyone is dull-hearted, without knowledge; Every metalsmith is put to shame by an image; For his molded image is falsehood, And there is no breath in them.They are futile, a work of errors; In the time of their punishment they shall perish.The Portion of Jacob is not like them, For He is the Maker of all things, And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; The Lord of hosts is His name.

So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.

and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man— and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

So I went in and saw, and there— every sort of creeping thing, abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed all around on the walls.

Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands.They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see;They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat.Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.

Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice,“ If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand,he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the Lord your God has forbidden you.For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.“ When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of the Lord your God to provoke Him to anger,

Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying,“ Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theater with one accord, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions.And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him.Then some of the officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater.Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together.And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, and wanted to make his defense to the people.But when they found out that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours,“ Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said:“ Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

They shall be turned back, They shall be greatly ashamed, Who trust in carved images, Who say to the molded images,‘ You are our gods.’

I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

Those who make an image, all of them are useless, And their precious things shall not profit; They are their own witnesses; They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.Who would form a god or mold an image That profits him nothing?Surely all his companions would be ashamed; And the workmen, they are mere men. Let them all be gathered together, Let them stand up; Yet they shall fear, They shall be ashamed together.The blacksmith with the tongs works one in the coals, Fashions it with hammers, And works it with the strength of his arms. Even so, he is hungry, and his strength fails; He drinks no water and is faint.The craftsman stretches out his rule, He marks one out with chalk; He fashions it with a plane, He marks it out with the compass, And makes it like the figure of a man, According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.He cuts down cedars for himself, And takes the cypress and the oak; He secures it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.Then it shall be for a man to burn, For he will take some of it and warm himself; Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread; Indeed he makes a god and worships it; He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.He burns half of it in the fire; With this half he eats meat; He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He even warms himself and says,“ Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire.”And the rest of it he makes into a god, His carved image. He falls down before it and worships it, Prays to it and says,“ Deliver me, for you are my god!”They do not know nor understand; For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, And their hearts, so that they cannot understand.And no one considers in his heart, Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say,“ I have burned half of it in the fire, Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals; I have roasted meat and eaten it; And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?”He feeds on ashes; A deceived heart has turned him aside; And he cannot deliver his soul, Nor say,“ Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

“ To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal And compare Me, that we should be alike?They lavish gold out of the bag, And weigh silver on the scales; They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god; They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it And set it in its place, and it stands; From its place it shall not move. Though one cries out to it, yet it cannot answer Nor save him out of his trouble.“ Remember this, and show yourselves men; Recall to mind, O you transgressors.

To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him?The workman molds an image, The goldsmith overspreads it with gold, And the silversmith casts silver chains.Whoever is too impoverished for such a contribution Chooses a tree that will not rot; He seeks for himself a skillful workman To prepare a carved image that will not totter.

But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.

For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple.They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good.”

Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people,“ It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!”

He even set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son,“ In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;

And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

For they said to me,‘ Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said,‘ This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’”

Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him,“ Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

“ You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.
