那時，摩西正在牧放他岳父米甸祭司葉忒羅的羊群。有一次，他把羊群領到曠野的盡頭去，到了神的山，就是何烈山。

以色列全體會眾都照著耶和華的吩咐，一站一站，從汛的曠野起程，在利非訂安營。在那裡人民沒有水喝。

神回答：“我必與你同在；你把人民從埃及領出來的時候，你們要在這山上事奉神；這就是我派你去的憑據。”

摩西的岳父葉忒羅，和摩西的妻子與兩個兒子，來到曠野摩西那裡，就是到神的山，摩西安營的地方。

那時亞瑪力人來了，在利非訂和以色列人爭戰。

“過了四十年，在西奈山的曠野，有一位使者，在荊棘中的火燄裡，向摩西顯現。

那曾經在曠野的大會中，和那在西奈山上對他說話的使者同在，也與我們的祖先同在的，就是他。他領受了活的聖言，傳給我們。

這都是寓意的說法：那兩個婦人就是兩個約，一個是出於西奈山，生子作奴僕，這是夏甲。
