有一天、有兩個做妓女的婦人來見王，站在王面前。一個婦人說：『哦，我主上啊，我和這婦人住在一間屋子：和她同屋時我生了孩子。我生產了第三天，這婦人也生了孩子；我們都在一處；除了我們二人在屋子裏，再沒有別人同我們在屋裏。夜間這婦人的孩子死了、是因為她睡在孩子身上。她半夜起來，趁使女睡覺的時候，從我旁邊把我的兒子抱去，使他睡在她懷裏，又使她死的兒子睡在我懷裏。清早我起來、要給我兒子喫奶，誰知孩子竟是死了的。但是早晨我細細察看他，並不是我所生的兒子呀。』那一個婦人說：『不是的；那活的是我的兒子，那死的是你的兒子。』這婦人說：『不是的：那死的是你的兒子，那活的是我的兒子。』他們在王面前說來說去。王說：『既然這人說：「這活的是我的兒子，那死的是你的兒子。」那人說：「不是的，那死的是你的兒子，那活的是我的兒子。」』王說：『那麼給我拿刀來』；人便將刀拿到王面前。王說：『將活的孩子劈成兩半，一半給這一人，一半給那一人。兒子活着的那婦人、因為愛兒子的心腸火熱、就對王說：『哦，我主上啊，將那活的孩子給她吧；千萬不可殺死他。』那婦人說：『這孩子也不歸我，也不歸你；將他劈了吧。』王應聲說：『將活的孩子給這婦人；千萬不可殺死他；這婦人實在是他的母親。』以色列眾人聽見王所決定的判斷，就都敬畏王；因為見王心裏有上帝的智慧能行判斷。

示巴女王聽見所羅門為永恆主耶和華的名所造成的名聲，就來，要用難解的話試試所羅門。

『在你城內若有案件在流血與流血之間、辯訴與辯訴之間、毆打與毆打之間、爭訟的點太離奇、不是你所能判斷的，那麼你就要起來，上永恆主你的上帝所要選擇的地方，

我做了窮人的父；我查明素不認識者的案件。
