But select capable men from all the people— men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain— and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

But choose men of ability from all the people. They must have respect for God. You must be able to trust them. They must not try to get money by cheating others. Appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

He appointed judges throughout the nation in all the fortified towns,and he said to them,“ Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the Lord. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case.Fear the Lord and judge with integrity, for the Lord our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes.”In Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites and priests and clan leaders in Israel to serve as judges for cases involving the Lord’s regulations and for civil disputes.These were his instructions to them:“ You must always act in the fear of the Lord, with faithfulness and an undivided heart.Whenever a case comes to you from fellow citizens in an outlying town, whether a murder case or some other violation of God’s laws, commands, decrees, or regulations, you must warn them not to sin against the Lord, so that he will not be angry with you and them. Do this and you will not be guilty.

“ Appoint judges and officials for yourselves from each of your tribes in all the towns the Lord your God is giving you. They must judge the people fairly.You must never twist justice or show partiality. Never accept a bribe, for bribes blind the eyes of the wise and corrupt the decisions of the godly.

The God of Israel spoke. The Rock of Israel said to me:‘ The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God,

He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others,

He chose capable men from all over Israel and appointed them as leaders over the people. He put them in charge of groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.

On the third day Joseph said to them,“ I am a God fearing man. If you do as I say, you will live.

“ Run up and down every street in Jerusalem,” says the Lord.“ Look high and low; search throughout the city! If you can find even one just and honest person, I will not destroy the city.

They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse.They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong.

I was a father to the poor and assisted strangers who needed help.

In this delegation were ten leaders of Israel, one from each of the ten tribes, and each the head of his family within the clans of Israel.

So Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace.( Obadiah was a devoted follower of the Lord.

But as soon as I leave you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you away to who knows where. When Ahab comes and cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I have been a true servant of the Lord all my life.

But this is what you must do: Tell the truth to each other. Render verdicts in your courts that are just and that lead to peace.

The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself,‘ I don’t fear God or care about people,

Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.So God replied,“ Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!

Those who are honest and fair, who refuse to profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong—

Choose some well respected men from each tribe who are known for their wisdom and understanding, and I will appoint them as your leaders.’“ Then you responded,‘ Your plan is a good one.’So I took the wise and respected men you had selected from your tribes and appointed them to serve as judges and officials over you. Some were responsible for a thousand people, some for a hundred, some for fifty, and some for ten.“ At that time I instructed the judges,‘ You must hear the cases of your fellow Israelites and the foreigners living among you. Be perfectly fair in your decisionsand impartial in your judgments. Hear the cases of those who are poor as well as those who are rich. Don’t be afraid of anyone’s anger, for the decision you make is God’s decision. Bring me any cases that are too difficult for you, and I will handle them.’

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

“ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another.

Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don’t condemn me along with murderers.Their hands are dirty with evil schemes, and they constantly take bribes.

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.

I gave the responsibility of governing Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, for he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.

“ Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said.“ Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”

But they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

“ You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.And do not slant your testimony in favor of a person just because that person is poor.“ If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away, take it back to its owner.If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.“ In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.“ Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent.“ Take no bribes, for a bribe makes you ignore something that you clearly see. A bribe makes even a righteous person twist the truth.“ You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it’s like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.

then God will establish one of David’s descendants as king. He will rule with mercy and truth. He will always do what is just and be eager to do what is right.

But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders— the heads of the clans of Israel— must present themselves to you.

Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment.

Our courts oppose the righteous, and justice is nowhere to be found. Truth stumbles in the streets, and honesty has been outlawed.Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who renounces evil is attacked. The Lord looked and was displeased to find there was no justice.

Then I pressed further,“ What you are doing is not right! Should you not walk in the fear of our God in order to avoid being mocked by enemy nations?

Now testify against me in the presence of the Lord and before his anointed one. Whose ox or donkey have I stolen? Have I ever cheated any of you? Have I ever oppressed you? Have I ever taken a bribe and perverted justice? Tell me and I will make right whatever I have done wrong.”“ No,” they replied,“ you have never cheated or oppressed us, and you have never taken even a single bribe.”

No one cares about being fair and honest. The people’s lawsuits are based on lies. They conceive evil deeds and then give birth to sin.

“ If I have been unfair to my male or female servants when they brought their complaints to me,

“ I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.

Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.

When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.

“ There was a judge in a certain city,” he said,“ who neither feared God nor cared about people.

There are hired murderers, loan racketeers, and extortioners everywhere. They never even think of me and my commands, says the Sovereign Lord.

He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money.
