But select capable men from all the people— men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain— and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

But choose men of ability from all the people. They must have respect for God. You must be able to trust them. They must not try to get money by cheating others. Appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.

But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit. Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.

He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,and said to the judges,“ Consider what you do, for you judge not for man but for the Lord. He is with you in giving judgment.Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful what you do, for there is no injustice with the Lord our God, or partiality or taking bribes.”Moreover, in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed certain Levites and priests and heads of families of Israel, to give judgment for the Lord and to decide disputed cases. They had their seat at Jerusalem.And he charged them:“ Thus you shall do in the fear of the Lord, in faithfulness, and with your whole heart:whenever a case comes to you from your brothers who live in their cities, concerning bloodshed, law or commandment, statutes or rules, then you shall warn them, that they may not incur guilt before the Lord and wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Thus you shall do, and you will not incur guilt.

“ You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous.

The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God,

does not lend at interest or take any profit, withholds his hand from injustice, executes true justice between man and man,

Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

On the third day Joseph said to them,“ Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, look and take note! Search her squares to see if you can find a man, one who does justice and seeks truth, that I may pardon her.

They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,

I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.

and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel.

And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household.( Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly,

And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth.

These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;

For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself,‘ Though I neither fear God nor respect man,

Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.And God said to him,“ Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right,behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,

Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’And you answered me,‘ The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes.And I charged your judges at that time,‘ Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him.You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,

Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men,in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes.

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

I gave my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was a more faithful and God-fearing man than many.

He said,“ Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice.

You shall not fall in with the many to do evil, nor shall you bear witness in a lawsuit, siding with the many, so as to pervert justice,nor shall you be partial to a poor man in his lawsuit.“ If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall bring it back to him.If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying down under its burden, you shall refrain from leaving him with it; you shall rescue it with him.“ You shall not pervert the justice due to your poor in his lawsuit.Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked.And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.“ You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

then a throne will be established in steadfast love, and on it will sit in faithfulness in the tent of David one who judges and seeks justice and is swift to do righteousness.”

But if they blow only one, then the chiefs, the heads of the tribes of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.

And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.

Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter.Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.

So I said,“ The thing that you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?

Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me and I will restore it to you.”They said,“ You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”

No one enters suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies, they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.

“ If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant, when they brought a complaint against me,

I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel.

who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue.

He said,“ In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.

not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
