Moses named the place Massah( which means“ test”) and Meribah( which means“ arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying,“ Is the Lord here with us or not?”

This place was known as the waters of Meribah( which means“ arguing”) because there the people of Israel argued with the Lord, and there he demonstrated his holiness among them.

The Lord says,“ Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.

“ You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth hattaavah.

So once more the people complained against Moses.“ Give us water to drink!” they demanded.“ Quiet!” Moses replied.“ Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?”

don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness.There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.

“ Moses himself told the people of Israel,‘ God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people.’Moses was with our ancestors, the assembly of God’s people in the wilderness, when the angel spoke to him at Mount Sinai. And there Moses received life giving words to pass on to us.“ But our ancestors refused to listen to Moses. They rejected him and wanted to return to Egypt.

“ The time has come for Aaron to join his ancestors in death. He will not enter the land I am giving the people of Israel, because the two of you rebelled against my instructions concerning the water at Meribah.

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, replied to them,“ Today we know the Lord is among us because you have not committed this treachery against the Lord as we thought. Instead, you have rescued Israel from being destroyed by the hand of the Lord.”

And he said,“ O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession.”

Let all the people of Jerusalem shout his praise with joy! For great is the Holy One of Israel who lives among you.”

You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God’s laws only for a price; you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim to depend on the Lord.“ No harm can come to us,” you say,“ for the Lord is here among us.”

Then my anger will blaze forth against them. I will abandon them, hiding my face from them, and they will be devoured. Terrible trouble will come down on them, and on that day they will say,‘ These disasters have come down on us because God is no longer among us!’
