Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded Moses. He eventually placed it in the Ark of the Covenant— in front of the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant.

Then I turned and came down the mountain and placed the tablets in the Ark of the Covenant, which I had made, just as the Lord commanded me. And the tablets are still there in the Ark.”

Nothing was in the Ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Mount Sinai, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel when they left the land of Egypt.
