The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!”

願在埃及、死於耶和華手、爾時坐於肉鼎之側、食餅而飽、爾導我入此野、是欲以饑殺斯會眾也、○

曰昔我在埃及有肉盈鼎、有餅果腹、盍乘此時、死於耶和華手、奚導我於野、使會眾饑而死乎、

以色列人謂之曰、願主使我死於伊及地、我在彼有肉盈釜、有餅可飽、何導我於此曠野、使斯眾饑而死乎、

The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

The Israelites said to them,“ We wish the Lord had put us to death in Egypt. There we sat around pots of meat. We ate all the food we wanted. But you have brought us out into this desert. You must want this entire community to die of hunger.”

and the people of Israel said to them,“ Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

“ If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned.“ There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”

The sons of Israel said to them,“ If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread until we were full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this entire assembly with hunger!”

And the children of Israel said to them,“ Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

and the children of Israel said unto them, Would that we had died by the hand of Jehovah in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh- pots, when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!”

And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots,[ and] when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this desert to kill this whole assembly with hunger!”

and the children of Israel said to them,“ We wish that we had died by Yahweh’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

The riffraff among them had a strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said,“ Who will feed us meat?We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.

Those slain by the sword are better off than those slain by hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.

But the people thirsted there for water and grumbled against Moses. They said,“ Why did you ever bring us up from Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

The people quarreled with Moses and said,“ If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD.Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?Why have you led us up from Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It’s not a place of grain, figs, vines, and pomegranates, and there is no water to drink!”

In the morning you will say,‘ If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say,‘ If only it were morning!’— because of the dread you will have in your heart and because of what you will see.

All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them,“ If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!

“ Oh, Lord GOD,” Joshua said,“ why did you ever bring these people across the Jordan to hand us over to the Amorites for our destruction? If only we had been content to remain on the other side of the Jordan!

You are already full! You are already rich! You have begun to reign as kings without us— and I wish you did reign, so that we could also reign with you!

“ I wish before God,” replied Paul,“ that whether easily or with difficulty, not only you but all who listen to me today might become as I am— except for these chains.”

He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so much that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said,“ It’s better for me to die than to live.”Then God asked Jonah,“ Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”“ Yes, it’s right!” he replied.“ I’m angry enough to die!”

The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried,“ My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor, they cried out, and their cry for help because of the difficult labor ascended to God.

“ May the LORD take note of you and judge,” they said to them,“ because you have made us reek to Pharaoh and his officials— putting a sword in their hand to kill us!”

If you are going to treat me like this, please kill me right now if I have found favor with you, and don’t let me see my misery anymore.”

May the day I was born be cursed. May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.May the man be cursed who brought the news to my father, saying,“ A male child is born to you,” bringing him great joy.Let that man be like the cities the LORD demolished without compassion. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a war cry at noontimebecause he didn’t kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, her womb eternally pregnant.Why did I come out of the womb to see only struggle and sorrow, to end my life in shame?

Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us?

Why is light given to one burdened with grief, and life to those whose existence is bitter,

After this, Job began to speak and cursed the day he was born.

For that night did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, and hide sorrow from my eyes.

I wish you would put up with a little foolishness from me. Yes, do put up with me!

They stopped asking,“ Where is the LORD who brought us from the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, through a land of drought and darkness, a land no one traveled through and where no one lived?”

The next day the entire Israelite community complained about Moses and Aaron, saying,“ You have killed the LORD’s people!”
