Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.

And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,

So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.

And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree,[ which] when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

Then he cried to Yahweh. Yahweh showed him a tree, and he threw it into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There he made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there he tested them.

他們是為了要考驗以色列，好知道他們是否肯聽從耶和華藉摩西吩咐他們列祖的命令。

法老逼近的時候，以色列人舉目，看哪，埃及人追來了，就非常懼怕，以色列人向耶和華哀求。

你要記得，這四十年耶和華－你的上帝在曠野一路引導你，是要磨煉你，考驗你，為要知道你的心如何，是否願意遵守他的誡命。

耶和華對摩西說：「看哪，我要從天降食物給你們。百姓可以出去，每天收集當天的分量。這樣，我就可以考驗他們是否遵行我的指示。

上帝啊，你曾考驗我們，你熬煉我們，如煉銀子一樣。

耶和華留下這些國家，為要考驗所有未曾經歷迦南任何戰役的以色列人，

為要藉此考驗以色列是否肯謹守遵行耶和華的道，像他們列祖一樣地謹守。」

又在曠野將你列祖所不認識的嗎哪賜給你吃，為要磨煉你，考驗你，終久使你享福。

以利沙說：「拿點麵來。」他把麵撒在鍋中，說：「倒出來，給大家吃吧！」鍋中就沒有毒了。

摩西就呼求耶和華說：「我要怎樣對待這百姓呢？他們差一點就要拿石頭打死我了。」

他出去到了水源，把鹽倒在那裏，說：「耶和華如此說：『我治好了這水，從那裏不會再有死亡和不生產的事了。』」

在他的祭司中有摩西和亞倫，在求告他名的人中有撒母耳。他們求告耶和華，他就應允他們。

你不可聽那先知或是那做夢之人的話，因為這是耶和華－你們的上帝考驗你們，要知道你們是否盡心盡性愛耶和華－你們的上帝。

因為十字架的道理，在那滅亡的人是愚拙，在我們得救的人卻是上帝的大能。

百姓對約書亞說：「不，我們要事奉耶和華。」約書亞對百姓說：「你們選擇耶和華，要事奉他，你們自己作證吧！」他們說：「我們願意作證。」「現在，你們要除掉你們中間外邦的神明，專心歸向耶和華－以色列的上帝。」百姓對約書亞說：「我們必事奉耶和華－我們的上帝，聽從他的話。」那日，約書亞就與百姓立約，在示劍為他們制定律例典章。

耶和華對我說：「雖有摩西和撒母耳站在我面前，我的心也不顧惜這百姓。你把他們從我眼前趕出，叫他們出去吧！

你在急難中呼求，我就搭救你，在雷的隱密處應允你，在米利巴水那裏考驗你。（細拉）

所以萬軍之耶和華如此說：「看哪，我要熬煉他們，考驗他們；不然，為了我的百姓，我該如何行呢？

他若求告我，我就應允他；他在急難中，我與他同在；我要搭救他，使他尊貴。

雖然你們必須在百般試煉中暫時憂愁，你們要為此喜樂，使你們的信心既被考驗，就比那被火試煉仍然能壞的金子更顯寶貴，可以在耶穌基督顯現的時候得着稱讚、榮耀、尊貴。

鼎為煉銀，爐為煉金，惟有耶和華熬煉人心。

並要在患難之日求告我，我必搭救你，你也要榮耀我。」
