Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.

And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,

So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.

Then he cried to Yahweh. Yahweh showed him a tree, and he threw it into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There he made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there he tested them.

他们是为了要考验以色列，好知道他们是否肯听从耶和华藉摩西吩咐他们列祖的命令。

法老逼近的时候，以色列人举目，看哪，埃及人追来了，就非常惧怕，以色列人向耶和华哀求。

你要记得，这四十年耶和华—你的神在旷野一路引导你，是要磨炼你，考验你，为要知道你的心如何，是否愿意遵守他的诫命。

耶和华对摩西说：“看哪，我要从天降食物给你们。百姓可以出去，每天收集当天的分量。这样，我就可以考验他们是否遵行我的指示。

神啊，你曾考验我们，你熬炼我们，如炼银子一样。

耶和华留下这些国家，为要考验所有未曾经历迦南任何战役的以色列人，

为要藉此考验以色列是否肯谨守遵行耶和华的道，像他们列祖一样地谨守。”

又在旷野将你列祖所不认识的吗哪赐给你吃，为要磨炼你，考验你，终久使你享福。

以利沙说：“拿点面来。”他把面撒在锅中，说：“倒出来，给大家吃吧！”锅中就没有毒了。

摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我要怎样对待这百姓呢？他们差一点就要拿石头打死我了。”

他出去到了水源，把盐倒在那里，说：“耶和华如此说：‘我治好了这水，从那里不会再有死亡和不生产的事了。’”

在他的祭司中有摩西和亚伦，在求告他名的人中有撒母耳。他们求告耶和华，他就应允他们。

你不可听那先知或是那做梦之人的话，因为这是耶和华—你们的神考验你们，要知道你们是否尽心尽性爱耶和华—你们的神。

因为十字架的道理，在那灭亡的人是愚拙，在我们得救的人却是神的大能。

百姓对约书亚说：“不，我们要事奉耶和华。”约书亚对百姓说：“你们选择耶和华，要事奉他，你们自己作证吧！”他们说：“我们愿意作证。”“现在，你们要除掉你们中间外邦的神明，专心归向耶和华—以色列的神。”百姓对约书亚说：“我们必事奉耶和华—我们的神，听从他的话。”那日，约书亚就与百姓立约，在示剑为他们制定律例典章。

耶和华对我说：“虽有摩西和撒母耳站在我面前，我的心也不顾惜这百姓。你把他们从我眼前赶出，叫他们出去吧！

你在急难中呼求，我就搭救你，在雷的隐密处应允你，在米利巴水那里考验你。（细拉）

所以万军之耶和华如此说：“看哪，我要熬炼他们，考验他们；不然，为了我的百姓，我该如何行呢？

他若求告我，我就应允他；他在急难中，我与他同在；我要搭救他，使他尊贵。

虽然你们必须在百般试炼中暂时忧愁，你们要为此喜乐，使你们的信心既被考验，就比那被火试炼仍然能坏的金子更显宝贵，可以在耶稣基督显现的时候得着称赞、荣耀、尊贵。

鼎为炼银，炉为炼金，惟有耶和华熬炼人心。

并要在患难之日求告我，我必搭救你，你也要荣耀我。”
