So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.

These people were left to test the Israelites— to see whether they would obey the commands the Lord had given to their ancestors through Moses.

As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord,

Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions.

You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver.

These are the nations that the Lord left in the land to test those Israelites who had not experienced the wars of Canaan.

I did this to test Israel— to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the Lord as their ancestors did.”

He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.

Elisha said,“ Bring me some flour.” Then he threw it into the pot and said,“ Now it’s all right; go ahead and eat.” And then it did not harm them.

Then Moses cried out to the Lord,“ What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!”

Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with water and threw the salt into it. And he said,“ This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or infertility.”

Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also called on his name. They cried to the Lord for help, and he answered them.

do not listen to them. The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul.

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

But the people answered Joshua,“ No, we will serve the Lord!”“ You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said.“ You have chosen to serve the Lord.”“ Yes,” they replied,“ we are witnesses to what we have said.”“ All right then,” Joshua said,“ destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”The people said to Joshua,“ We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him alone.”So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the decrees and regulations of the Lord.

Then the Lord said to me,“ Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I wouldn’t help them. Away with them! Get them out of my sight!

You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered out of the thundercloud and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Interlude

Therefore, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:“ See, I will melt them down in a crucible and test them like metal. What else can I do with my people?

When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold— though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.”
