So the people grumbled against Moses, saying,“ What are we to drink?”

The people told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said,“ What are we supposed to drink?”

And the people grumbled against Moses, saying,“ What shall we drink?”

Then the people complained and turned against Moses.“ What are we going to drink?” they demanded.

The people grumbled to Moses,“ What are we going to drink?”

So the people grumbled at Moses, saying,“ What are we to drink?”

And the people complained against Moses, saying,“ What shall we drink?”

And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

The people grumbled to Moses,“ What are we going to drink?”

And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

So the people murmured against Moses, saying,“ What can we drink?”

The people murmured against Moses, saying,“ What shall we drink?”

In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.

They said to Moses,“ Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

“ Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Moses also said,“ You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”Then Moses told Aaron,“ Say to the entire Israelite community,‘ Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”

The Lord said to Moses,“ Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.”

Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down.So that place was called Taberah, because fire from the Lord had burned among them.The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said,“ If only we had meat to eat!We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost— also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”

The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.“ You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.

And do not grumble, as some of them did— and were killed by the destroying angel.

They spoke against God; they said,“ Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”

Do everything without grumbling or arguing,

they spoke against God and against Moses, and said,“ Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?”

Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.They quarreled with Moses and said,“ If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord!Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”

That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them,“ If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”And they said to each other,“ We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said,“ Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”Then Moses cried out to the Lord,“ What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
