日間、永恆主在他們的前面走，在雲柱中領導他們的路；夜間、在火柱中光照亮他們，使他們日夜都可以走路。

見一切驕傲的人，使他低微；把惡人踐踏於他們的本處；

一眨眼他們就死亡、於半夜中；平民被震撼而過去；有權勢的被除滅、非借人手。

永恆主在天上打雷；至高者發出他的聲音，冰雹及火炭。他射出他的箭來，使仇敵四散；他閃了閃電使他們潰亂。

他若靜止不動，誰能嫌他不對呢？他若掩面，誰能見他呢？無論對國對人都是一樣；

因此我在他面前驚惶失措；我思念這事、便懼怕他。上帝使我的心膽怯，全能者使我驚惶。

他們一看見，就大喫一驚，驚惶失措，慌慌張張逃跑。

他望着地，地便震顫；他摸着山，山就冒煙。

在以色列營前面行走的上帝使者、轉到他們的後邊去；雲柱也從他們前面轉去立在他們的後邊來，在埃及營和以色列營中間。一邊是雲是黑暗：一邊照亮着黑夜；終夜彼此不能相近。

第二天掃羅把人民分為三隊，在晨更時候進了亞捫人營中，擊敗他們直到太陽正熱的時候；剩下的人都潰散，沒有剩下二人同在一處的。

故此你老說：「上帝知道甚麼？他哪能看透幽暗而施行審判呢？

又纏住他們的車輪，使車行走重難，以致埃及人說：『我們從以色列人面前逃跑吧；因為永恆主為他們爭戰、攻打埃及人了。』
