安放約櫃的聖幕支起來那天，雲彩遮蓋了它。當晚，雲彩整夜像火焰一般。之後，每天如此：白天雲彩遮蓋聖幕，晚上雲彩像火。雲彩什麼時候從聖幕上升起，以色列人就啟行；雲彩在哪裡停下來，以色列人就在哪裡安營。他們無論啟行還是安營，都遵照耶和華的吩咐。雲彩在聖幕上停留多久，他們就安營多久。有時雲彩在聖幕上停留多日，他們就遵照耶和華的吩咐安營多日。有時雲彩在聖幕上只停留幾天，他們就遵照耶和華的吩咐只安營幾天。隨後再照耶和華的吩咐啟行。有時雲彩整夜停留在聖幕上，到早晨才升起，他們就早晨才啟行。不管白天黑夜，雲彩一升起，他們就啟行。不管是兩天、一個月或是一年，只要雲彩停留在聖幕上，以色列人就安營不動；雲彩一升起，他們就啟行。他們遵照耶和華的吩咐安營，也遵照耶和華的吩咐啟行。他們遵行耶和華藉摩西吩咐的話。

他們拔營前行的時候，白天總有耶和華的雲彩在他們上面。

祂白天以雲柱帶領他們，晚上用火柱引導他們。

你還是對他們大施憐憫，沒有在曠野離棄他們。白天，雲柱沒有離開他們，仍然引導他們前行；夜間，火柱仍然照亮他們當走的路。

這時，在以色列人前面領路的上帝的天使，轉到百姓後面，雲柱也隨著移到後面立住。雲柱停在埃及軍隊和以色列人的中間，埃及軍隊這邊一片黑暗，以色列人那邊卻有光，雙方整夜都無法接近對方。摩西向海伸出手，耶和華便整夜用強勁的東風吹退海水，將海底變成乾地。海水分開後，以色列人踏著乾地走入海中，海水如兩道牆立在他們左右。法老的軍兵車馬緊追不捨，都跟著下到海中。到了破曉時分，耶和華從雲柱火柱中俯視埃及軍隊，擾亂他們的隊伍。

摩西進入會幕後，便有雲柱降下來，停在會幕門口，耶和華就跟摩西說話。每當百姓看見這景象，他們都站在自己的帳篷門口敬拜耶和華。

那時，有雲彩遮蓋會幕，耶和華的榮光充滿了聖幕。摩西不能進會幕，因為雲彩停在上面，耶和華的榮光充滿了聖幕。一路上，雲彩從聖幕升起，他們就出發。雲彩不升起，他們就不出發，一直等到雲彩升起。一路上，白天有耶和華的雲彩停留在聖幕上面，夜間雲中有火光為以色列百姓照明。

耶和華必在日間用煙雲遮蔽整個錫安山和那裡的會眾，在夜間用火光照亮他們。祂的榮耀必遮蓋一切，是白日避暑的亭子，是躲避狂風暴雨的避難所和藏身處。
