When your children ask you,‘ What does this ceremony mean to you?’–

It shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying,‘ What is this?’ that you shall tell him,‘ By strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage.When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, Yahweh killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of livestock. Therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

One generation will commend your works to another, and will declare your mighty acts.

that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in the future, saying,‘ What do you mean by these stones?’then you shall tell them,‘ Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant. When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.’”

Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
