Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.”

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt— darkness that can be felt.”

The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,“ Reach out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt. It will be so dark that people can feel it.”

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.”

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt.”

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Reach out with your hand toward the sky, so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be felt.”

Yahweh said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.”

Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. His subjects ground their teeth in anguish,and they cursed the God of heaven for their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their evil deeds and turn to God.

By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.

For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment.

These people are as useless as dried up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness.

And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Lift your hand toward the sky so hail may fall on the people, the livestock, and all the plants throughout the land of Egypt.”

But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.

The Lord blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go.

You will grope around in broad daylight like a blind person groping in the darkness, but you will not find your way. You will be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will come to save you.

They will go from one place to another, weary and hungry. And because they are hungry, they will rage and curse their king and their God. They will look up to heavenand down at the earth, but wherever they look, there will be trouble and anguish and dark despair. They will be thrown out into the darkness.

They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the foam of their shameful deeds. They are like wandering stars, doomed forever to blackest darkness.

He loosed on them his fierce anger— all his fury, rage, and hostility. He dispatched against them a band of destroying angels.

For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark.” Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate.

His birth would have been meaningless, and he would have ended in darkness. He wouldn’t even have had a name,

Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
