They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.

The people suffered because of their hard labor. The slave drivers forced them to work with bricks and mud. And they made them do all kinds of work in the fields. The Egyptians didn’t show them any pity at all. They made them work very hard.

“ You are no longer to give the people straw to make bricks as previously; have them go and gather straw for themselves.But you shall impose on them the quota of bricks which they were making before; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, for that reason they cry out,‘ Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’Let the labor be heavier on the men, and have them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words.”So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying,“ This is what Pharaoh says:‘ I am not going to give you any straw.You go, get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it; but none of your labor will be reduced.’ ”So the people scattered through all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.And the taskmasters pressed them, saying,“ Complete your work quota, your daily amount, just as when you had straw.”Moreover, the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and asked,“ Why have you not completed your required task of making bricks either yesterday or today, as before?”Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying,“ Why do you deal this way with your servants?There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us,‘ Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your own people.”But he said,“ You are lazy, very lazy; for that reason you say,‘ Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, but you must deliver the quota of bricks.”The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble, since they were told,“ You must not reduce your daily amount of bricks.”When they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were waiting for them.And they said to them,“ May the Lord look upon you and judge you, because you have made us repulsive in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us!”

I will put it into the hand of your tormentors, Who have said to you,‘ Lie down so that we may walk over you.’ You have also made your back like the ground, And like the street for those who walk over it.”

But she said to them,“ Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

You may also pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another.

“ I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

And the Egyptians treated us badly and oppressed us, and imposed hard labor on us.

And now, what do I have here,” declares the Lord,“ seeing that My people have been taken away without reason?” Again the Lord declares,“ Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually reviled all day long.

Then God said to Abram,“ Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.

Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes, Which subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.

When you lie down among the sheepfolds, You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver, And its pinions with glistening gold.

Draw for yourself water for a siege! Strengthen your fortifications! Go into the clay and tread the mortar! Take hold of the brick mold!

This is what the Lord of armies says:“ The sons of Israel are oppressed, And the sons of Judah as well; And all who took them captive have held them firmly, They have refused to let them go.Their Redeemer is strong, the Lord of armies is His name; He will vigorously plead their case So that He may bring rest to their land, But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.

He shall be with him like a worker hired year by year; he shall not rule over him with severity in your sight.

You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.

But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be a people of His own possession, as today.

Who eat the flesh of my people, Strip off their skin from them, Smash their bones, And chop them up as for the pot, And as meat in a cauldron!”
